Today I'm sharing this 🔥 video from our recent Engineering onsite at Demandbase HQ in SF! https://lnkd.in/eFAFR6QG We were so fortunate to host Zhengxuan Wu and Aryaman Arora, two upcoming AI researchers from Stanford University Department of Computer Science. Their approach to fine tuning, called ReFT, targets the representations emitted by neural net layers rather than the weights of the layers themselves. This makes it very flexible when using the same base model for swapping multiple fine tunes. The memory overhead is also very low for their intervention weights. Another highlight is how powerful it can be. One POC they showed forced the LLM to speak in only emojis exhibiting ReFT's power to control output. Control is crucial when, for example, you want to prevent your bot from offering customers unauthorized refunds!! If you're already familiar with LoRA, it should be pretty simple to use with only a few extra hyperparameters -- details in the video. Here's a link to the repo. A spin-off can make or break your venture. I spent Labor Day weekend in San Francisco where Waymo has taken over the streets! I saw no major issues except a lot of traffic created from looky-loo's checking out the driverless vehicles. While Waymo is expanding it's robo-taxi service throughout the Bay Area and parts of Los Angeles it is still facing challenges. Last week, a Waymo vehicle re-routed into oncoming traffic in Phoenix 😳 How do you feel about autonomous vehicles and robotaxis? Thus, advancement in the field is challenged by a lack of predictive models and, arguably, a lack of time-series information for a highly dynamic system. Here, we discuss work in wound healing, for accelerating wound closure. We argue that timing of treatments is as critical to consider as the choice of drug or therapy. Due to system size and complexity, data-driven methods need to be explored to develop multi-dimensional quantifiable indicators tracking systemic changes. In this work I discuss how bioelectronic devices enhanced with deep learning can help facilitate real-time sensing and actuation for automated decisions in treatment for wound healing and preliminary work in transcriptomic based classification of wound states. Bio: Marcella M. Gomez is an associate professor at UC Santa Cruz in the department of Applied Mathematics and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Baskin Engineering. She received her PhD from Caltech in 2015 and a B.S. from UC Berkeley in 2009; both degrees in Mechanical Engineering. Her research interests are in the broad field of bio-control leveraging methods in machine learning and control theory. Meta uses monorepo to manage its code. I was skeptical about this approach when I joined the company a few years ago. How could it work with such a massive codebase? But I was wrong. Having lived in SF bay area for so long, I came to know the big coffee culture scene here. I was totally consumed by it a while ago and spent years trying to attain the “perfect" latte. I published a fun coffee story and my entire home setup, which took weeks of research and multiple iterations, in my blog link in bio. Meanwhile, to all fellow coffee loving tech peeps, here are some top tips that no one told me. Put it in practice at home or in microkitchens. - A big factor in preparing milk suitable for latte art is pressure of the wand. If this is important to you, you need to get a machine that has a strong enough pressure. - When pulling shots, put in 18g of beans and extract 30g of espresso. - The darker the roast, the coarser the setting should be on the grinder, the lighter the roast, the finer the setting should be. - When adjusting the grind setting, do so while the grinder is working if there are beans in the hopper. Otherwise, a bean can get stuck between the burrrs. - Pulling a shot should take 20-30 sec in time, or based on observation. It should look like caramel going out, not a waterfall. - Eventually work your way to using a bottomless portafilter. It punishes you for all the small imperfections when preparing your coffee puck, like any tilt, and uneven distribution. It does so by spraying the espresso all over the place. The more you can get it to flow uniformly, the better your preparation of espresso, objectively. - Seal your beans in a vacuum, so they don’t go stale. The more stale the beans, the more minor adjustment you need to make to grind finer. - When steaming milk in your pitcher, you can tell if it’s done by holding the pitcher and as soon as the heat becomes unbearable i.e. stings, it’s done. - Taking a latte art course at a local coffee shop was the best boost for me to start nailing latte art.

One of the best things about being in San Francisco 🌉 is the ability to drop in on great talks. Last week I had a chance to see NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang (JH) being interviewed by Stripe's CEO Patrick Collison. Jensen is among the longest-serving founder-CEOs in Silicon Valley at the moment (30+ years). With that comes a special clarity of mind and some hot takes. 🌶👇 🗣 Jensen doesn't believe in 'praise in public and criticism in private'. Instead, he reasons that most information in the organization should not be privy to certain people. By giving feedback in public, you allow everyone to learn. 'What is better than learning from your own mistakes? It's learning from someone else's mistakes!!' 🔥 JH also doesn't like to fire people. He would rather "torture them into greatness". He invests in people and he doesn't like to write off his investments. 👨‍💻 Asked whether he likes his job every day, he answers "no". The perfect job doesn't give you happiness 100% of the time. "No great things were done, that were easy all the way." ... "Even if I come home from a day where I did things I didn't enjoy, it could still be have been a great day." 👩‍👧‍👦 Jensen famously has 60 direct reports. "This allowed us to cut out probably 7 levels of management". His subordinates don't necessarily have such large teams. "It doesn't scale down, less senior people need more guidance". Looking at the numbers, this approach allowed NVidia to reach ~2T market cap with ~28.000 people vs. Microsoft's 3T with ~220.000 people and Apple's 2.6T with 160.000 people. ❔ Jensen answers almost every question in the same way: "Let's break it down, let's reason about it". This is a great response on so many levels. First, it allows him to not be put on the spot. Second, it allows him to teach his workforce how he reasons through a problem so that they can emulate it and create alignment. Third, it gives people a chance to point out flaws in his reasoning. He admits he is not right all the time. ON AI 👨‍🔧 "You will not lose your job to AI, your company will go out of business because another company used AI." "If you're not using AI you're doing it wrong." ⏱ The extent to which AI will enter many processes is largely underestimated. Right now we are focused on language - sounds in a time sequence. "Any time sequence can be tokenized." This will include robotic movement. 🥛 JH also expects that we won't be satisfied with foundation models "You're going to want to tune it into perfection because you care so deeply. Say if it's already at 99% you'll want to get it to say 99.3%" This last piece is also why we created Query Vary (YC W22). AI will never feel truly intelligent until it completely understands your data and context. It needs to be taught, regardless of how powerful the foundation model is. Finally, besides insights, it was remarkable how funny Jensen was, cracking a joke at roughly a 1 per 3 min rate. It was a very entertaining talk. #ai #sf
