Hiding from reality is very dangerous in business. The longer a leader tries to ignore the facts, the more damage it can cause. Think about the Enron scandal, the Lehman Brothers, the FTX or the Theranos case - in all those cases leaders were pretending to not see the underlying issues... in hindsight, it's obvious they knew, but preferred to ignore... Leaders of companies that operate in the terrorist state of russia have a personal responsibility for the decision to keep that part of the business, to pay multimillion-dollar taxes & other payments into the state's military budget - which is used daily to kill, torture and terrorize people of Ukraine, and to keep russia's own population in terror. These leaders know, but prefer to ignore. And the longer they do, the more employees start to question their integrity. The more investors start asking uncomfortable questions. The less engaged and motivated their organizations become... It's better to get the head out of the sand and (finally!) stop doing business in the terrorist state. True leadership is visionary, not blind! #exitrussia #stopgenocide ...... Don't miss twice! I was talking to a friend last week. They had a long string of closing their move ring every day on their Apple Watch. If they were behind at the end of the day, they would hop on the treadmill to make sure it got done.    And then a day was missed… because of life. And guess what? Once the streak was broken, they just quit. Completely! “Not sure why I did that. But it seems too hard to start back up again.”   James Clear in Atomic Habits gives the excellent advice of don’t miss twice. Life is going to happen. Mistakes are going to be made. But the biggest mistake is giving up, and staying in the ditch.    I know I’ve been there… if it’s not perfect, I’m not interested. But remember, you can do more in a year than you think. If you just stay with it. So, on the days you do miss, don’t let is completely derail you. Just start again tomorrow. Don’t think too much about perfection, just start again. 3 months from now you’ll be grateful you didn’t let one mistake turn into another. And we are working towards tomorrow, not today.   More detail from Mr. Clear here:

For those gray hairs like me that have been in manufacturing for decades, you will recognize the macro trend. Price pressure kicks in, get rid of the trainers first, survive the crisis then move on to the demand crush. Ride the wave of growth at all costs, and at the next downturn, get rid of the quality folks (NVA), and survive the crisis. Then survive the next wave of the growth curve, while the long term talent pool that helped get there exits with their knowledge of how survival manifests itself. The moral of the story is that if quality isn’t embedded in your culture AND the culture of your supply base, these cycles will eventually crush your organization. If you are a real disruptor, focus on design methods that remove quality issues by design. Whether that is less raw materials, less processes, simplified design construction AND/OR complete visibility of the data that describes everything in a well contextualized way…….that method will persist and thrive. The rest will become the business that is picked up by the aforementioned.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had this “conversation” in my career. And it hasn’t always been with Finance. Branding is the long game. The process can feel uncomfortable for organizations with leaders that don’t understand the metrics that track brand health. But brands that do, build fans and fans will choose you every time. The key is balance so the brand is protected and fortified while the short-term tactics support monthly targets.
