It's devastating to see the damage caused by the California wildfires. T-Mobile is doing everything we can to help affected communities and first responders stay connected. Here are a few updates:  🔘 T-Mobile and Starlink opened up our T-Mobile Starlink Direct-to-Cellular service in impacted areas, delivering wireless emergency alerts, SMS, and enabling 911 texting, even without commercial power.  🔘 We’ve restored over half of the sites affected by power loss and are working to support the rest with portable generators.  🔘 We are collaborating with federal, state, and local officials to ensure critical connectivity, including deploying Wi-Fi routers at key locations.  Additional details on community support can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gnpXud6B

This is a major announcement for T-Mobile, as it indicates its progressing to become the primary all-mode #communications supplier for both #consumers and #business users. Adding the Lumos Fiber assets for #Fiber #broadband connectivity enables T-Mobile and especially T-Mobile For Business to become a bundled provider of #mobile, #FWA over #5G, and #fiber #internet and #communications services. And while the acquired fiber assets are currently regional and in a relatively limited area, there is no doubt T-Mobile plans to invest to greatly expand the fiber infrastructure. Given T-Mobile's aggressive pricing and marketing, this a warning to Verizon and AT&T that T-Mobile is coming for their customers. #Uncarrier

Who would acquire UScellular? Either Verizon or T-Mobile US? This has been the speculation in the industry for last two weeks. Finally, T-Mobile US made it. The Un-carrier acquisition of US Cellular for $4.4 billion is purely a scale-driven deal. As part of this deal, T-Mobile US will acquire UScellular’s customer base, its retail stores and 30% of its spectrum licences. WASHINGTON, Nov 26 (Reuters) - The Federal Communications Commission said on Tuesday it has approved a license for T-Mobile (TMUS.O), opens new tab and Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink unit to provide supplemental coverage from space in a bid to extend internet access to remote areas. The license marks the first time the FCC has authorized a satellite operator collaborating with a wireless carrier to provide supplemental telecommunications coverage from space on some flexible-use spectrum bands allocated to terrestrial service. The partnership aims to extend the reach of wireless networks to remote areas and eliminate "dead zones." #TMobile #SpaceX

The loss that people are experiencing in the California wildfires is unimaginable. The FCC’s approval of Starlink’s direct-to-cell service with T-Mobile is significant. This partnership aims to provide cellular coverage in areas where traditional networks don’t reach, addressing long-standing issues with dead zones. It also strengthens emergency communication capabilities and improves network reliability, particularly in rural and remote locations. However, could this partnership potentially cannibalize some of Starlink’s revenue? Kathleen and I are both T-Mobile and Starlink customers. We are a “work from anywhere” couple and we use Starlink at our cabin in a remote part of Alaska because T-Mobile service doesn’t work there. With this new partnership, we might find we no longer need Starlink. The same could be true for boats, RVs, and other remote homes that currently rely on Starlink due to lack of coverage from traditional networks. I don't see the feds allowing any additional contraction in the market. #Tmobile #USCellular T-Mobile would gain U.S. Cellular's infrastructure, potentially improving its network coverage and capacity, particularly in rural areas where U.S. Cellular has a stronger presence. This could enhance service quality for T-Mobile customers in those regions. On the negative side of the coin, the combination of T-Mobile's acquisition of U.S. Cellular and DISH Wireless's financial struggles could shift market dynamics significantly, leading to higher barriers to entry for new players and less innovation in service offerings, ultimately to the detriment of consumers.

Has the telecom world gone too far on fiber? Verizon announced it will buy Frontier for $20B. T-Mobile is putting in $950M into a Lumos partnership. AT&T's launches Gigapower with an investment from Black Rock. Uniti will buy or merge with Windstream. Being clear, I love, love, love fiber. It started with my hardest college classes and has continued from there. I was blessed to visit AT&T Bell Labs (best trip ever!) in 1990 and later the first US FTTH trails at Bell Atlantic, etc. Great trials but the expense of a superhighway was not supported by the horse and buggy of that day. Fiber is always the best answer when it can be justified with only one caveat- it cannot be done really wrong. This is rare but personally I did clean up one such system in a business park. After advocating for years, fiber is now appearing everywhere. How can that be too much? 1) Blowback - This will cause blowback in the future and the customer will pay for it. Many rural communities are getting 2, 3 or more providers in areas that can only support a single, subsidized provider. The rural SC area that I am from has around 7 homes per mile. Now there are 2 fiber providers in most places and 3 in some- the local EMC, the local telco coop, and AT&T. Will small telcos and EMCs be able to sustain this in 10, 20 years? Two is one too many and with others jumping in, there's not enough customer to go around. Don't stop competition. We've needed it and the telcos were slow to seal their markets. But irrational investment always leads to a downfall. Who paid for Enron or the 2008 crash? Not those companies driving it. 2) Customer focus - No one wakes up and says, "This big name telco and some Wall Street company will provide me better service and will be there for me and the community 10 years from now." Frontier was sued in 2021 by the FTC, 6 states and others for terrible service. I routinely talked to people who would go without POTS services for 4 months waiting on a single visit. Garbage in- garbage out. In the fad to play the game, being left out is a big fear. The execs and investors don't see the day-to-day and, honestly, they want to be left out. A good headline is only a temporary bump. Experience shows that poorly performing systems will require much more time and investment than the new owner can stomach. People will get blamed and there will be announcements in a few years undoing some of these deals. Guess who will still have bad service in 5+ years? 3) Imbalance - While some areas get too many providers, some will continue to go ignored. Even with all the funding available, a number of companies are defaulting on CAF and RDOF obligations. There will be many more of these. What's worse than getting too tipsy at a party? Being there yesterday for the CPUC’s grant approval was inspiring. Out of the $157 million awarded statewide, Vallejo’s $3.8 million allocation is more than broadband—it's about families in these project areas, small businesses along the way, and the transformative potential of connectivity for Mare Island. Seeing this collaboration between the City of Vallejo, our Smart Fiber Networks team, and Cal Consulting, I felt immense pride. Each project brings real impact, closing the digital divide and setting Vallejo up as a model for accessible connectivity. BREAKING NEWS: It's official: T-Mobile will acquire most of US Cellular. The important points: > $4.4 billion > Includes > Wireless operations > 30% of spectrum (600MHz, 2.5GHz, 700 MHz, AWS, PCS) >Does not include towers > TMO to sign MLA for 15 years on a minimum 2,015 towers > TMO will remain on 600 US Cellular towers > USC will now be able to sell the tower company > USC to sell remainder of spectrum (possibly to VZW or other parties) > No mention of how they expect to get DOJ and FCC approval for the transaction. It is hard not to see this as anti-competitive, notably announced on the same day that TMO raised rates for older subscriber plans. It seems like a good resolution for USC and TDS, if approved.

I'm with the Broadband Forum community in San Diego this week, marvelling not only at the progress that's been made since we last got together with our members, contributors and staff - but also the significant achievements over the past three decades. This week, Broadband Forum is celebrating 30 years of making broadband a reality. During the organisation's lifetime, the milestones we've achieved have mirrored the incredible development of broadband from a dial-up alternative to multi-gigabit connectivity. Continuous themes have ensured success, from collaboration between our members and the wider industry, to adoption of an open-source approach. Also crucial has been evolving with the pace of broadband progress, from delivering specifications for a copper-based physical layer to the fiber broadband world we live in today with billions of connected devices being supported by our connected user and home experience standards (TR-069 and #USP). This is all down to our dedicated membership. Over the 30 years they have come together and consistently delivered on industry standards, interoperability, best practices, and certification programs for the broadband that we witness today and strive for tomorrow. As we take stock of the progress we must remember that the work is not done. With the number of connected users soon to pass 1.5 billion(!), the expectations have gone beyond fast speeds and into new realms that we must be prepared for as an industry. I would like to thank all those companies and individuals, past and present, that have helped us fashion today’s broadband. The FCC’s proposal to mandate phone unlocking within 60 days of activation would have a significant impact on secondary device markets. Unlocked phones would flow more freely, enabling greater access to global resale channels and fostering fair competition among wireless carriers and MVNOs. Arguments against unlocking, such as fraud concerns or potential price increases, appear to be largely overstated and fail to account for how unlocked devices empower consumers and enhance market efficiency. This initiative would benefit not only MVNOs but also the broader ecosystem of refurbished and secondary device sales, facilitating smoother lifecycle transitions and a wider availability of affordable, unlocked devices worldwide.
