"Some Credit Unions are a generation away from being obsolete." Woah, ... that was a surprising statement. Thanks to our good friend Mark Chandler, we got to spend a wonderful night on the water in San Diego as part of the Origence's LendingTech conference. Tom Orman was sharing his thoughts on Credit Union and FinTech partnerships. Tom explained that over 25+ years in the Credit Union space, things have accelerated to change rapidly, especially post-Covid. For an outsider to the Credit Union industry like me, it's easy to assume that all Credit Unions are the same. That's far from true as I've learned over the last 4+ years: There is a wide spectrum of Credit Unions: super innovative ones and then others who prefer doing things "the way they've always done it." A lot of what Tom said was in line with our observations summarized in the attached thought leadership piece. Key Points from Tom and my conversation that align with what we've learned about the industry: 🚀 Innovation Spectrum: Credit Unions range from highly innovative to those sticking to traditional methods. 📉 Digital Transformation Needs: Credit Unions must embrace digital transformation to stay relevant and competitive. 🔄 Change Management: Successful change requires top-down support and a willingness to break away from the "we've always done it this way" mentality. 📱 Member Experience: Enhancing digital onboarding and creating a seamless omnichannel experience is crucial. 🏦 Financial Health: Effective digital strategies can significantly reduce loan origination and member acquisition costs. 📈 Growth Goals: Ambitious Credit Unions with strong growth goals are more likely to embrace and benefit from technology. 🌟 Cross-Selling Opportunities: Credit Unions should leverage technology to cross-sell products and deepen member relationships. 🌍 Industry Challenges: Credit Unions face unique challenges, such as maintaining member loyalty in a digital age dominated by direct-to-consumer FinTech innovations. Who owns your end to end GTM system? What about the Bowtie data model? This was a key question during our two-day Revenue Architecture Summit in Santa Cruz. Marketing owns awareness. BDRs or equivalent own education. Sales owns selection. Finance oversees the mutual commit/contracting. Professional services do onboarding. CS helps with retention. Account managers focus on expansion. So do we even need somebody to own and optimize the overall #bowtie process and data model? YES! "But my marketing is great at increasing leads and sales is increasing close rates, so why worry about an overall owner?", you might say. What if the new leads are low quality and sales is rushing through the sales cycle, ultimately yielding high onboarding and ongoing churn? Whether you like it or not, revenue production is a closed loop system. Something you do on the left side of the bowtie impacts the right side and the other way around. Best to assign an unbiased data owner who does that personally have anything to gain by making the data tell any particular story. The most likely owner for the overall system, or at least for the overall data model, lives in operations or finance. We see new titles around GTM Strategy and Operations. We also see RevOps moving from CRO to COO or CFO. So hence my question: In your company, who owns the end-to-end revenue production system? We don't talk about Membershine much... yet. And that's because we're too busy in our first niche product line that sells to HOAs. All of our leads currently come through the HOA Start brand, found here: https://hoastart.com/ We have so many customers, and it seemed time to start talking about their organization-changing experiences by way of Case Studies. Tim Hickle helped us bring these to life. He's also gotten us knee-deep in monthly webinars, and that's going so well. Seek this man out for fractional marketing help. He is on top of his deliverables and been great to work with. If the production value seems lower than you'd expect, remember we're trying to do this remotely and that certainly has it's challenges. We'll only get better as we keep doing these. With all that said though, it was the stories we heard from this exercise that floored us. I like to say we're selling to B2B.C, because our customers are non-profits, but our ICP is buying like a consumer. One of the Case Studies found that our software made it possible to save their organization over $50,000!!! How amazing is this? These are HOAs/Condos. Most aren’t bringing in more than a few hundred thousand annually… so saving that kind of coin is just massive. Our little software did that. We ran four Case Studies to start, and we're so stoked about how much our fans love what we're doing. I recently spoke with a product manager who was frustrated with the close ties between metering and pricing in her organization. This interconnectedness was causing significant misalignments between the finance, sales, and engineering teams. Here’s why: In traditional billing platforms, metering is tightly integrated with pricing. This leads to various challenges: ➡️ Engineers have to manage usage tracking while being forced to grasp pricing logic, diverting their focus from core product development. ➡️Finance teams are heavily reliant on engineers to set up and maintain accurate metering infrastructure, which slows their ability to iterate quickly on pricing strategies. ➡️This complexity is compounded by the sales team’s need for flexibility in pricing configurations, limiting their ability to respond to customer demands and close deals faster. However, by decoupling metering from pricing, you can create the most flexible environment you can conceive. 1️⃣Engineers can focus solely on improving data accuracy and usage tracking without needing to integrate complex pricing considerations 2️⃣ Finance teams can independently manage pricing models, whether pay-per-use, tiered, or custom, without relying on engineers.  3️⃣ Sales teams can propose and implement customer-specific pricing strategies (e.g., based on API calls, GBs stored, etc.) seamlessly without requiring technical changes. Clear boundaries between metering and pricing can facilitate improved cross-functional collaboration, drive growth, and optimize revenue.
