Capcom has released a less-than-positive annual report. There's nothing critical in it; all the declines are tied to a pause in releases. Capcom certainly has a vast catalog of successful franchises for upcoming releases. Resident Evil (RE) stands out distinctly. While Capcom didn't start with RE, it played a crucial role in their history and has had a significant impact on the gaming industry as a whole. Today, RE comprises 32 releases across 33 platforms. These are incredible numbers and a testament to success. Moreover, judging by Metacritic scores, Capcom manages to maintain a high standard of quality. I gathered a timeline of all RE releases on one website (link in the comments). I thoroughly enjoyed watching videos, reading books, reminiscing about my own experiences playing the games, and playing with friends and colleagues. Here are a few interesting facts about RE and Capcom: - Resident Evil 4 was released on 14 platforms. - The first RE took 3 years to develop, instead of the usual 3-6 months for Capcom in 1996. Consultants hired from the U.S. advised shutting down the project when it was almost complete, predicting its failure. - Devil May Cry and Dino Crisis were born while searching for fresh gameplay for RE. - Capcom was one of the first companies to start paying revenue shares to developers, which is particularly noteworthy for Japanese companies. - Toy Story I and RE I were released around the same time. - For a while, music for RE was composed by a well-known Japanese composer who was said to be deaf. It later turned out that he wasn't actually deaf and didn't compose the music himself. PS. In 2026, the series will celebrate its 30th anniversary, and there will likely be a special release or edition. Or perhaps they'll simply release a version with full DualSense support.

Layoffs and studio closures are a business failure. Full stop. Whether you're a publisher, investor, or C-suite. If you haven't built a plan resilient enough for the 100s of landmines this industry has to offer then that is a business failure. A team that ships a bad game is a better team. A studio that's dealt with bad culture is a better studio. When you throw that investment out, it's only going to benefit somebody else (and significantly damage the industry in the process)

How we solve problems for clients as a voice production company. Game devs don't come to us because they need voices for their game. They come to us seeking solutions to problems. Usually problems they have faced on previous projects with other audio / voice production suppliers. 1. Lack of resources in house - The most common pain point we help solve for our clients is their lack of internal resources and time. They want to protect their team's focus and time so that they can work on the most meaningful and important tasks to them. — 2. Communication - Another common issue we hear from clients & prospects is that when they have worked with bigger agencies / studios / suppliers - it can often result in communication frustrations. It's not quick and easy for them to get a hold of the specific people they need. Often having to go through a few levels of Production Managers to get assets or answers. — 3. Diversity in talent casting - "We're hearing the same voices in a lot of games" "We want to make sure we're being more diverse with our casting this time" Two things I hear all the time from prospective clients. The problem: the traditional way of voice producing a game was to hire a studio in London or perhaps L.A and have that studio cast and record the actors. Trouble is - the studio is relaying on booking out that studio time to increase revenues which means they can only work with actors local to them. The solution: Focus on going to where the actors are. Multi Location Voice Production. — 4. Getting the best people - A real frustration for our prospects when working with bigger vendors / suppliers is the people they get assigned to their project. Our clients and prospects always want the A team. The vendor's best people. However, they often get the junior or temp Producer looking after them with the big suppliers. Readability wins over cleverness—almost always. When I was starting out, I loved writing clever, elegant code—those compact one-liners or smart tricks that made me feel accomplished. They felt like badges of honor, showing off my skills and ingenuity. But as I worked on larger projects and collaborated with diverse teams, I realized that clever code often sacrifices something vital: maintainability. Readable code: - Empowers teams. It’s easier for others to understand, debug, and build upon your work. - Saves time. Future you (or someone else) won’t have to unravel your thought process six months later. - Promotes inclusivity. Not everyone has the same experience level or familiarity with niche techniques. That doesn’t mean there’s no room for creativity or optimization. But I’ve learned to ask myself: “If someone else had to maintain this code tomorrow, would they thank me or curse me?” In my experience, readable, clear code makes for better teams, better products. Friends, I'm very sorry to relay Take-Two Interactive's report that it is cutting about 5% of its workforce and several projects in development, which Reuters estimated at around 600 employees. That would make this the 5th biggest cut of the year. The games industry is undergoing an unprecedented transformation today. With news of layoffs and team restructuring dominating our channels almost every other day, the question I often get - 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? The normalization of unprecedented gains during COVID, overestimated future demand, inflation, challenges in user acquisition post-IDFA/privacy changes, an overcrowded market, rising costs, and the complexity of game production and live services are all contributing factors. Additionally, Gen AI forces everyone to rethink production to stay competitive. 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 Over the years, the risk-to-reward ratio for new game launches has been shifting unfavorably. Increasing costs, red ocean markets, and the complexity of live services make capturing, engaging, and retaining players to achieve profitable outcomes incredibly challenging. Efficiently translating game ideas/IPs into successful games is tough. Highly experienced teams equipped with cutting edge technology and tools are more likely to create great games. In contrast, inexperienced teams often end up over-iterating, learning on the go, stretching timelines, and/or diluting quality. Great talent is essential today and in the future to build great games. Period. 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 & 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐀𝐌  This is a safer, more predictable, and an incremental risk path for companies with successful games. Doubling down on existing games is a no-brainer part of every company's strategy. However, due to talent bandwidth constraints, companies often focus on their top games while many high-potential games in their portfolio are deprioritized and forced to die a slow death. In my years of experience in the industry, this is a massive untapped opportunity highly worth leveraging! Expanding TAM (Total Addressable Market) can provide significant gains for successful games. This complex task depends on a deep understanding of market differences and motivations that drive engagement and monetization behaviors, applying these insights to game and live services operations to unlock growth. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 This is undoubtedly a massive event on the games industry timeline. But time will reshape how games are designed, produced, and shipped to global audiences in meaningful ways. Every now and then, I defy my paradoxically introverted nature and venture forth into the wild. Sometimes I have fun encounters and meet interesting people - this is my primary motivation for going. Recently, I went to the Seattle Indie Con-Spire event over Christmas break. It was a lot of fun and I got to meet some cool people! One of those people really captured my attention - Shiaw-Ling Lai and I had some fascinating conversations about game development and cultural fluency, and we resolved to meet up to talk some more after the new year. We did in fact chat later over a coffee and she dropped a hypothesis on me that gave me a slightly different lens through which to look at game production. In evolutionary biology, scientists originally thought that species change gradually, over long periods of time - small, steady steps that create a gradual change. This is known as gradualism. However, a more holistic theory sees evolution as a series of branches, where evolution is mostly stable but is occasionally disrupted by sudden bursts of rapid change, leading to dramatic shifts in a comparatively short amount of time. I've long felt similarly about game development; I have a design philosophy deck that I share with my teams that talks about iterative philosophy and how you can't know your final destination because of the decisions you'll make on the way there. It was really fun to talk about "healthy" game development and what we think our experience-based ideals are! I love both phases; when you're not making dramatic changes, the pace is smoother and you can polish and refine what exists; and when you're making dramatic changes, the opportunity for exciting DISCOVERY within the framework of the game is thrilling for the team and the designer! Project GREAT WALL 2nd Playable Demo is LIVE! Folks who apply over the next few days should show up on our back end, where we can manually send access codes. Access codes enable playtesters to play the game via iCloudSky streaming. Playtesters will also receive a survey, which we humbly request they fill out after playing our build. The playtest will continue for 2 weeks, so if you are unable to access the cloud server due to capacity, please try again later at your convenience. Game development is a series of work-in-progress builds that may lack features obviously desired by the customer. To this end I want to educate folks on the features of our build that are placeholder that we are aware of: - Voice Acting is currently AI-generated - Level background has not yet been implemented, will be in December - Visual Effects are placeholder - we are hiring VFX artist currently - Sound Effects are placeholder - we will hire an audio engineer - Music is placeholder - we will to hire a composer in the new year - Graphical fidelity is not at the level we intend - we are hiring a graphical engineer once we achieve vertical slice quality to accelerate reproduction To investors and close friends we will be sending a direct download zip file link.
