What unique value does AWS Bedrock offer? It seems like Llama 3.1 8b is accessible both on my laptop and via AWS Bedrock on the same day, so what's the real differentiator? Or, in investor terms, what's the "moat"? AWS Bedrock doesn't serve as a market maker since AWS's own model isn't the anchor model. It's also not a pure model registry like Hugging Face. While its model serving capabilities offer governance and security, the model prompting and embeddings are completely customizable, which undermines model portability. Additionally, it lacks detailed insights into the strengths and weaknesses of different models, making it hard for customers to rely on it for selecting the right model for the right task. For instance, can it advise you that Flan-T5 is adequate for sentiment analysis?

Everyone knows at this point that a year ago I had a difficult dismissal at MongoDB, where between several illegalities (firing over Slack, denying access to the offices while still employed, locking me out of my email and systems while travelling corporate in New York, ecc), all for trying to save our Website budget from spending 1 million USD per year on something that Cloudflare offered for 5$ a month, and while denying a bribery for being lenient to it. I had already overcame the fact that sometimes business needs call for measures and decisions that might not always be financially driven, but am terribly shocked and emotionally crushed to have found out that not only did they fire me, but failed to comply with a very basic legal obligation in Italy to have notified the republic that I was no longer employed by them. Why did that came as a shock? Because it was deliberately done, and with intent. Between Silvia Tropea , Davide Giuliano and Marie Ronan , I would be sure they would understand the law and the implications of failing to notify the Repubblica Italiana that I was unemployed: - I was no longer getting paid. - I was denied Naspl (severance) when I was still within the legal period to request it, and about to go to street situation and starve. - I could not enroll to public agencies for employement. - I could not get access to free healthcare, and get the anti-depressants I’m needing. - I could barely get enrolled in the social service program that has helped me with a place to sleep far from the cold, while my nose was bleeding, and access to public meals, whence I spent over 40 days in ketosis and with anemia. I don’t think that the fact they are a multi-billion dollar company traded in NASDAQ and with FedRamp regulation speaks more to a simple class consciousness issue, but it really shocks me in regards to my own definitions of Human Dignity, the Universal Letter of Human Rights, and the very definition of civility and barbarianism, which should set us apart from animals, by the mere fact that only the Modern State should have the monopoly of violence. I did not felt unfairly dismissed from a job. I felt barbarily violated by criminals of the worst kind. I can feel the pain of Ms. Paisley today, and I recommend their legal department review what the Duty of Care should stand for, at least in the United Kingdom, instead of having snailed my life around an unsurmountable amount risk, for what I poetically define as: pennys over grannys.

At #OffsetSymposium2024, and couldn’t agree more with Corey Jaskolski that wide-spread #cloud adoption across #DOD allows startups to scale more broadly, lowers their costs, allows them to move faster, and ultimately delivers more, saving the limited taxpayer dollars we have for #nationaldefense.

Kubernetes and Function-as-Service (FaaS) don't go well together -- you probably already know that. This recent SOSP paper by Ana Klimovic and her team at ETH breaks down why. 👇 The problem? With FaaS, the demand for rapidly launching and terminating execution environments, such as VMs or containers, is high. This frequent setup and teardown of "sandboxes" becomes costly due to Kubernetes micro-service architecture and intense interactions with the databases to store state related to complex concepts ("deployments", "replica sets", "pods", etc) In the paper, they report that Knative -- a FaaS manager built on Kubernetes -- can only sustain 2 (yes, that's TWO !! 🤯 🤦‍♂️) concurrent cold starts per second. That's because every cold start requires a flurry of DB writes and the (asynchronous) participation of several micro services. Further -- and I learned this in the paper -- k8s stores state in deeply nested trees that average 17kB in size (wtf!!!). This drives CPU utilization during (de)serialization and contributes to kubernetes abysmal performances. The team from ETH proposes a clean state design removing much of Kubernetes' complexity. This includes a simplified set of components, minimalistic APIs and optimized data structures. They suggest not persisting state information for each function's sandbox, significantly simplifying cold starts critical path. The trade off? It is possible that, during failures, the system doesn't have a precise count of how many sandboxes are running a function. But the system is so optimized that, in case of failures and loss of precise state, it is able to scale up to meet load demands much faster than Kubernetes ever could. The paper is full of interesting details, such as their attempt to hack down kubernetes to manage pods directly, instead of using deployments and replica sets. But even that was too slow. Also, the astute reader will notice the paper's reference to durable execution (and specifically DBOS, Inc.'s Apiary paper ;) to "requests fault tolerance" for serverless computing! #serverless #durableexecution #research #faas
