“Patricia Herlihy Ph.D, RN is a research analyst with an unusual twist. She began her career as a cardiac and psychiatric nurse, and this experience has enriched her research with both a clinical and humanistic perspective. I have found her to be creative, innovative and able to communicate statistical information in a way that is easily understood, as well as having a good sense of what it takes to disseminate critical research information to those of us in the trenches.”

The National Behavioral Consortium Industry Profile of External EAP Vendors
Journal of Workplace Behavioral Health
It is common practice in many professions, fields, and industries to disseminate comparative information. Absent this vital resource an individual company cannot accurately evaluate their performance against a similar cohort and therefore must rely upon anecdotal information. The findings of this study address this deficiency in the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) field by reporting empirically derived comparative data for external providers of EAP services. During 2012 the National Behavioral Consortium obtained a convenience sample of 82 external EAP vendors, located primarily in the United States and Canada and 10 other countries and ranging in size from local providers to global business enterprises. The combined customer base represented by these vendors included more than 35,000 client companies and over 164 million total covered lives. The 44 survey items addressed eight categories: (1) company profile, (2) staffing, (3) customer profile, (4) utilization metrics, (5) survey tools and outcomes, (6) business management, (7) business development, and (8) forecasting the future of EAP. Results reveal a wide range between vendors on most of these factors. Comparisons were also conducted between vendors based on market size, country, and pricing model. Implications for operational practice and business development are discussed along with considerations for future research.

BIG: Blip or Historic Moment
The Journal of Employee Assistance
This article takes a sociological perspective using Disruptive Innovation Theory to understand the underpinnings of the BIG ( Brief Intervention Group) movement in the Employee Assistance Field. It outlines the history of its conception, progress over the last 5 years since first introduced into the workplace setting and then challenges the reader whether this movement is a historical shift for the EAP Field or merely a Blip on their radar.

Specific cases as well ss US Department of Defense responses to better handle these issues are offered to educate psychiatric-mental health nurses of the potential differences in symptomatology and presentation of MST. This appears to be an increasing problem with the predicted cohort of returning veterans appearing both in the US Department of Veterans Affairs system as well as in civilian locations, hospitals, community centers and especially in the workplace. It will be critical to develop training materials and pursue future research to identify this silent syndrome of MST to better meet the needs of our returning veterans.

A Longitudinal Lens on the Evolution of EAP, Work-life and Wellness Benefit Programs
World@Work
How have employee assistance (EAP), work- life and wellness programs changed in the businesses that were recognized as “family friendly” 15 years earlier? How have employee assistance (EAP), work- life and wellness programs changed in the businesses that were recognized as “family friendly” 15 years earlier? Harsh economic conditions have threatened discretionary benefits that positively affect talent recruitment, retention, employee productivity and corporate image over this very same time period . Thus, the authors investigated these changes in three progressive benefits programs in light of the economic and sociological changes that had occurred in the interim.
Prior literature has sought to identify the motives for adopting family-friendly policies
use only.
A logical extension to this scholarship is to ask how such programs, once adopted, are shaped by factors both within and external to the organization. Changing conditions, especially fiscal stress, may lead to the adulteration Firms adopt family-friendly policies when attracting or retaining committed staff. Thus, it follows that these benefits may be reduced or terminated as firms down- size. A plausible, alternative scenario is that the non-economic factors supporting family-friendly benefits protect these programs when companies hit hard times.
The study’s findings are based on ethnographic data collected via telephone interviews from 28 companies designated as family-friendly in 1993 The survey instrument was designed to compare recent practices and policies of EAP, work-life and wellness programs with the responses from a 1993 Boston University study that surveyed firms ranked most family-friendly by Working Mother magazine. The authors inquired about the status of the benefits, changes in the scope and structure of the benefits, internal and external factors influencing these changes, and an explanation of the strategic choices made by management in response to those factors.Other authors -

Workplace Inclusion Scale

In 2010 Chestnut Global Partners (CGP) created the Workplace Outcome Suite (WOS) to provide EA professionals with a method for collecting empirical data about the impact of their interventions. This scale has been in existence for over ten years and the most recent report confirms data from over 45,726 users who have used EAP counseling services during that time span. Chestnut Health Systems, the parent company
of CGP, recently created a new psychometrically informed instrument to help the EAP field integrate inclusion into its services: the Workplace Inclusion Scale (WIS).
The WIS is a tool that organizations can use to quickly assess the impact of diversity and inclusion efforts as perceived by those employees working within one or more departments and regional offices of an organization. Specifically, it is a method for EAPs, as management consultants, to offer HR, benefit departments, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs a unique lens to assess the perceived level of employee inclusion.
