After years of operational struggles, Boeing announced yesterday that Kelly Ortberg will be taking over for Dave Calhoun as CEO. Investors new to the sector since 2020 are likely unfamiliar with Ortberg’s track record: he has been retired since 2020, meaning a generation of A&D investors likely don’t know much about Rockwell Collins, UTAS, or BE Aerospace—all businesses he either ran or integrated (now part of RTX). Over my three decades of experience, I’ve seen many low-cost carriers (LCCs) flourish and continually evolve. Their strategies for growth can vary, but they remain centered on ways to expand their network and deliver value to customers on their own or with their chosen partners.  Today, at Navitaire, an Amadeus company we have many LCC and hybrid airline customers that have added and continue to increase the number of interline and codeshare services they offer.  They have found that interline partnerships can bring a lot of benefits for travelers, as well as airlines.   For passengers, interlines mean they can book ‘through itineraries’ to more destinations on two or more airlines with less hassle than booking each one separately. They can often check-in through to their destination and don’t need to transfer their bags.   Beyond the opportunity to extend their network via partners, interline deals give LCCs more ways to help them grow, as identified in our Travel Technology Investment Trends research.  For example, 54% of LCCs see access to higher value fares as the leading benefit from such arrangements, and 50% said it would offer opportunities to drive more bookings overall. Other perks included a chance to sell additional ancillary services such as express boarding or extra leg room.   Some 36% of LCC respondents said that they are already partnering or interlining with traditional full-service carriers (FSCs) today. This is an excellent recap of the key airline industry storylines from the past year. I’d love to see an expanded summary that includes insights on Part 135 operators, OEM developments, and emerging technologies shaping airlines in 2025. The convergence of challenges—such as Boeing, Spirit AeroSystems, and Pratt & Whitney’s ongoing issues, the financial hurdles facing Spirit and Southwest, the rising competition from Part 135 operators offering more personalized service, and advancements in air mobility technology from companies like Archer and Joby—makes the future of the industry more dynamic and exciting.

Worth a read for all those in ops and maintenance (O&M) or facility management (FM). I have quite a few conversations where GenAI is reduced to "intelligent search", or super-elevated to "replacing humans". Both extremes often miss the point of unlocking higher performance by humans, where each individual has more time to spend on higher value activities and can be guided to performing more of the right activities at the right time (and do less low value activities). I'm a passionate believer in digital twins because they connect people, assets and intelligence into coherent and interconnected systems - the people will change, the assets will change, and the intelligence will change (rapidly). As a business owner, I want our systems to be deeply connected to the environment we work in and for my people, assets and intelligences to work coherently and resiliently to achieve our objectives. With the rise of LCC, airlines adopted new business models that reshaped the industry. Cost reduction and optimized spending have become critical priorities. However, balancing cost control with delivering quality service that keeps customers satisfied remains a delicate challenge. Crew management plays a pivotal role in navigating this balance. Let’s take a closer look at how spending can be optimized during crew tracking. Traditionally, when a flight faced a crew shortage, the immediate focus was simply on finding a replacement—cost considerations often took a back seat. Controllers relied heavily on experience, instinct, and manual processes to secure substitutes. While certain crew members who responded well to last-minute changes were preferred, broader cost implications rarely entered the equation. In today’s competitive landscape, such an approach is no longer sustainable. To make informed decisions, users must now evaluate the full range of costs involved in crew replacements, including overtime, logistics, and compliance with legal guidelines. Striking a balance between operational efficiency and cost control is essential. Automated tools can offer data-driven suggestions for crew replacements, making it easier to weigh options and minimize unnecessary expenses. With profitability under pressure, incremental costs like overtime should be carefully monitored, with approvals required for significant overages. As airlines embrace cost-focused strategies, decision-making must prioritize both safety and financial impact. Even meticulously planned rosters can be disrupted by unexpected changes as departure approaches, leading to unforeseen expenses. Understanding the root causes of disruptions and analyzing past patterns can help airlines mitigate costs and establish best practices. This shift toward proactive cost analysis is transformative. One overlooked factor is the cost of crew swaps. Although swaps are permitted within specific parameters, their financial implications often go unexamined. Crew members frequently adjust their published rosters, which can result in significant operational changes. A pairing deemed too costly during planning may still end up operating on the day of departure due to such swaps. This makes it critical to scrutinize the impact of swaps more thoroughly. Automated tools that reveal the cost consequences of roster adjustments in real-time provide valuable insights. While airlines invest heavily in tools to create optimized rosters, there’s often little attention paid to why these rosters change and the costs incurred. The ability to analyze these shifts—identifying patterns, underlying causes, and financial impacts—is essential. The FAA's Self-Reporting System is a masterclass in safety improvement. The commercial aviation industry in the US boasts a phenomenal safety record – a 95% decrease in fatalities per 100 million passengers over the past two decades! This incredible achievement can be partly attributed to a brilliant program many might not be familiar with: the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) voluntary, non-punitive self-reporting system. Introduced in the late 1990s, this program empowers aviation professionals – pilots, cabin crew, mechanics, air traffic controllers, and more – to report safety concerns and incidents without fear of retribution. This fosters a culture of open communication, allowing valuable insights into potential hazards to be identified and addressed proactively. The anonymized data is then analyzed and freely shared across the industry, leading to significant improvements in training procedures, maintenance protocols, and overall operational safety. What can hospitals and the healthcare community learn from this success story? The healthcare industry, constantly striving for patient safety, can glean valuable lessons from the FAA's program. #ancillaryrevenue hits new record at $148.4B, according to IdeaWorksCompany and its latest CarTrawler reivew. Ancillary revenue contributes a crucial 14.9% to #airline revenue across the globe. For individual #airlines, this contribution can range from a low of 2% to a high of 56.4%. The upward march of ancillary revenue has recovered from a severe pandemic-era drop.
