Help decipher disinformation “Labeling AI-Generated Content: Promises, Perils, and Future Directions How should policymakers, platforms, and practitioners decide how to label AI-generated content? MIT Sloan professor David G. Rand and other researchers outlined two goals for labels: communicating whether a piece of content was created or edited using AI, and diminishing the likelihood that content misleads or deceives its viewers. They found that under certain conditions, labeling can decrease individuals’ likelihood of believing or engaging with misleading AI-generated images.

#Compute is not just a source of scientific and economic progress, but the new benchmark of global power economically and geopolitically, says a recently released report by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI). Just as governments needed to enable #infrastructure such as roads, railways and telecommunication networks for business to thrive, investing in shared and public compute has become equally important,” Jakob Mökander, TBI’s Director of Science & Technology Policy, said in an interview with The Innovator. Compute is, in fact, slated to become “the foundation of next-generation economic growth and influence, shaping economic developments, as well as the future of sovereign power and international influence,” says the TBI report. It notes that compute infrastructure – and the difference in its availability from country to country – risks becoming the basis of a new #digitaldivide. The U.S. built more #datacenter capacity in 2023 than the rest of the world combined, excluding China, according to the report. What’s more, large U.S. tech companies, including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, xAI and Oracle, are driving competition for the latest #chips, such as Nvidia’s Blackwell GPU, launched in March 2024. This latest architecture is designed to offer four-times faster training and 30-times faster #inference. As today’s largest #AI models can be four times more computationally intensive than in 2023, these chips – due to start shipping at the end of 2024 – will revolutionize the next generation of compute resources, says the report. A view persists that foundation models, for which large language models may be used as shorthand, are about text and chat; and some question the usefulness of that (it’s not reliable, say) or the value versus the resources required. But they are much more than that, for example: “The HCA’s [human cell atlass] foundation models are trained not on passages of text, but collections of cells. And their goal is not human-like composition but the creation of better and more useful maps.” “Drug companies are already, for example, using HCA data and models to screen potential drugs “virtually” before they are tested experimentally; to predict side-effects by discovering non-target tissues where the gene a drug candidate interacts with is expressed; and, conversely, to spot opportunities in such non-target tissues to extend a drug’s range of therapeutic targets.”

Despite the noise by high-tech corporations, #startups, #VCs, and analysts, we are in the early phase of #generativeAI. While we don't know if it will transform every business process driving operational efficiencies, create new revenue streams, result in massive productivity improvements, and curtail costs, the early signs are encouraging for pilot projects.
