Thesis: An Evaluation of Novel Lipid-Enveloped Nanoparticles for Adjuvant and Antigen delivery for an HIV Vaccine: Stepping from Laboratory into Potential Markets
The purpose of the work is to evaluate the technological and economical aspects of a potential vaccine designed by Professor Irvine’s group. Lipid-enveloped virion-sized nano-particles with a biodegradable polymer core are used as synthetic pathogens to deliver HIV specific antigens and adjuvants. The nano-particles are designed to display multiple copies of the antigen on their surfaces and to elicit humoral immunity response. Topics such as patent ability, obtaining an FDA licensure, storage, cost of manufacturing, and supply of the vaccine are explored. A business model for commercialization of the vaccine is outlined, and some possible future business opportunities for the nano-particles are discussed.
