Productized services have a fatal flaw. They don’t create stickiness with clients. Why? In the quest to systematize delivery, productized services strip away the very elements that foster long-term client relationships: Strategy and Customization: 1. Offering a one-size-fits-all solution means losing tailored strategies. 2. Strategy doesn’t scale easily, so it’s often the first thing to go. Deep Relationships: 1. Without strategic collaboration, you miss the chance to become deeply connected to your client’s business. 2. You’re not building that 1+1=3 dynamic that makes you indispensable. The result? A commoditized, base-level service that’s easy to swap out. High churn rates ensue. And in any recurring revenue business—services or SaaS—high churn is a killer. But there’s a better way. Embrace the good elements of productized services: - Transparent pricing - Well defined service tiers - Systematized delivery and GTM But don’t take it too far. Keep the aspects that make your service sticky: - Strategic insight - Customization - Deep client relationships There's a lot of good that's come out of the productized movement, but it's not a panacea. As Bruce Lee said, “Use only that which works, and take it from any place you can find it.”
