The battle against misinformation isn’t just about the looming election—it’s our new, daily reality, and it’s more urgent than ever.   At #AWNY24, industry leaders from Integral Ad Science (IAS) and IPG Mediabrands, in a conversation moderated by Axios’ Sara Fischer, drove home an essential point: misinformation is here to stay, and it’s evolving quickly. As Dave Byrne of IPG Mediabrands warned, “Harmful actors will find new tools, and AI is perfect for them to create misinformation.” He emphasized that “misinformation won’t go away after the November elections.”   Lisa Utzschneider of IAS underscored how pervasive theissue has become: “It’s the new norm now for officials to say ‘This is misinformation, and this is truth.’”   From presidential debates to local hurricane preparations, we’re seeing the impact across all levels of society.   When I counsel CMOs and other C-level executives, I take the position that we can’t afford to be reactive. Leaders and leadership brands must construct the toughest safeguards and navigate this landscape with vigilance and integrity. It’s not just about avoiding association with false information—it’s about actively contributing to a more truthful digital ecosystem.    This is not just a matter of brand safety—it’s about fortifying the foundation of our culture. ✅🖥️ Nielsen Gauge (9/17): “On the streaming CTV side, Peacock offered broad Olympics coverage to complement linear offerings, the success of which was demonstrated by a monthly viewership increase of 39% for the streaming service overall, and nearly double the amount of viewers aged 35-49. These factors helped lift Peacock from a 1.5% share of TV in July to a new platform-best 2.1% share in August (+0.6 pts.). It also makes Peacock only the third streaming platform this year to record a 0.5 point share increase or more on a monthly basis, in addition to YouTube (Feb. and July) and Netflix (June). Olympics programming on NBC drew millions of viewers in both primetime and daytime windows. Across all of NBC’s Olympics telecasts that aired during the August interval, 32 of them totaled more than 5MM viewers, and 17 garnered more than 10MM viewers. Moreover, Olympics telecasts on NBC notched the top 19 broadcast telecasts of the month, with the primetime presentation of the Women’s Gymnastics Team Final topping the charts with 17.9MM viewers. From a total television usage perspective, August levels were even with July. However, a year-over-year comparison revealed a larger imbalance, as usage this month was up 3.5% versus August 2023. A notable year-over-year difference was also evident among broadcast program genres, with broadcast sports program viewership up 239% over August 2023, further illustrating the impact of the Games on the overall TV landscape. Television has traditionally been about a value exchange: as viewers we understand that we “pay” for ad-funded content with our attention. This broadcast TV economic model has been challenged recently, but it’s really just evolving. Two-thirds of viewers in the U.S. express a preference for ad-supported subscriptions if it saves them money. That’s an increase of eight points in three years. We’re seeing the same embrace of advertising at home as well. The number of Australians with ad-supported video on demand (AVOD) services has nearly doubled, jumping from 962,510 in the June quarter of 2023 to 1.8 million in the June quarter of this year, according to Kantar. Good news for brands with the rise in ad-funded streaming opening up even more audiences at scale. In short, we know Americans are spending more time watching streaming services than traditional TV, but this hasn't yet manifested in updated strategies for advertisers. Amazon and Walmart have joined Netflix as the new "Big Three" in streaming, with the added benefit of owning robust data capabilities to continue to transform the advertising landscape. And, with the annual upfront negotiations on the horizon, it's crucial for marketers to revise their strategies now. Danny recommends: 1. As of May, the free, ad-supported streaming service was taking 1.8% of monthly television viewing across streaming platforms, tying with Disney+ and beating Max, Paramount+ and Peacock, according to Nielsen Gauge. It could be considered a win in the streaming wars. Tubi, though, doesn’t consider itself to be part of said wars, according to ​​Tubi CMO Nicole Parlapiano. “We are in a category of our own in that way. A lot of people like to put us in the same grouping with the other free streamers. But our product experience is so different because the Roku and Pluto [platforms], all the linear, FAST channels, it’s not really VOD viewing.” the CMO said. “Then the other comparisons are being drawn to the other ad-supported tiers. At Amazon and Netflix, people are still paying to watch ads, but it is also very different. I’ve seen the streaming war. Some people are winning and some people, it’s been a rough go. It’s been hard on the industry as a whole. We have a lot of empathy for everybody.
