MGM Resorts is a dominant force in entertainment and hospitality, hosting over 50 million guests each year. Despite being one of the most renowned brands in the world, many are unaware of how MGM continues to dominate the competition. So, I took it upon myself to interview Cole Nikodemus, Executive Director of Brand Strategy for MGM Resorts, and see if I could find aspects of MGM's Brand Strategy to apply that would be applicable to law firms. Here are my findings: There are 3 Core Aspects to MGM's Brand Strategy: - Establish a Core Brand Message - Adapt Your Brand Message to Fit Your Audience - Reach Your Audience in Unique and Memorable Ways Let's break these down: 1) Establishing a Core Brand Message: MGM’s core belief is that entertainment is a fundamental human need. This principle guides all their branding efforts, especially during crises like COVID-19 or the September 2023 cyber attack. For law firms, this translates to: Creating a core promise that differentiates you from similar firms. For example, your core promise could be to simplify the legal process and explain difficult concepts in plain language without legal jargon. Note: It's not enough to create the brand promise and store it in a file somewhere. You need to make sure your team understands and embraces the brand promise and your marketing team weaves the promise throughout your firm's marketing materials. 2) Adapting Your Brand Message to Fit Your Audience MGM tailors its messaging to different segments. For instance, Excalibur's ads focus on a family-friendly experience, while Bellagio's emphasize luxury. The takeaway for law firms is to develop a narrative that ties all your marketing efforts together but adjust your message to fit different practice areas and client segments. I see way too many websites that use the same messaging on every service page, even though these pages speak to different audiences who have different pain points and definitions of success. 3) Reach Your Audience in Unique and Memorable Ways During last year's Las Vegas Grand Prix F1 race, MGM hosted a "Shoey Bar" where they sold a commemorative racing shoe with a special beer-drinking insert. This brand activation played on F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo's signature celebration where he drinks beer out of his shoe on the podium. The takeaway for law firms is to create memorable and relevant experiences for your clients by tapping into popular culture or current events. This is easy to say, harder to do. I've seen estate planning attorney get backlinks from Forbes by guest blogging about the estate planning issues in Knives Out, a whodunit murder mystery involving a wealthy patriarch and dysfunctional family members hungry for their inheritance. Event planners are built differently. Take my wife Stacy; to me her airplane snack bag seemed excessive. But from her perspective, she was just planning for all contingencies: • Water, because getting stranded without it isn’t an option. • Napkins, because airline napkins disintegrate. • A cup with ice, because plane ice is iffy, and she can’t afford to get sick. • Keto lunch, because airplane food isn't. • Extra hummus, because there’s never enough in the boxed lunch. • Beef jerky, for me, so I don’t end up raiding her stash. • Trail mix, in case of a tarmac delay. • A guilty treat, she’ll take three bites and hand me the rest (I know my role). Then there’s my snack plan: a single snack-size can of Pringles. I operate on optimism; she operates on foresight. Every last-minute plan and snack “emergency” is covered, backed up, and double-checked. Like I said, life is different when you're married to an event planner.
