Semiconductor Engineering recently put out a great piece on legacy process nodes, discussing their utility and popularity for everything from sensors to PMICs (power electronics). There’s rightly a lot of focus on the research and development happening at cutting-edge nodes like 2nm and 14-angstrom, but for the world of semiconductors outside of #HPC and #AI chips much of the interesting design work is happening on older manufacturing processes like 130nm or 90nm from the early 2000s. We’re excited to help upgrade these legacy nodes with MST-SP and MST-SPX to enhance performance in mobile PMICs, sever racks, and beyond! DC-DC Conversion Collaboration: A Legacy of Innovation The Smart Power Stage (SPS), DDR5 PMIC, and TLVR are critical building blocks powering today’s xPUs and memory systems. Behind these technologies lies a remarkable history of industry collaboration that has shaped the landscape of modern power solutions. • SPS (Smart Power Stage): Initially referred to as HPMOS, SPS was co-defined by HPE, TI, and Infineon. The concept originated from a single slide #86 in the 2009 APEC Tutorial T7 presentation, laying the foundation for a transformative power delivery solution. • DDR5 PMIC: This innovation was a joint proposal by TI and HPE, as documented in the JEDEC submission. Following this, JEDEC assembled a working group comprising Intel, Samsung, Micron, Hynix, and IDT to develop the standard. TI played a pivotal role, leveraging cross-organizational expertise to create a groundbreaking package design. Their extensive work in packaging and thermal simulations ensured unparalleled board-level reliability (BLR). • TLVR (Transient Load Voltage Regulator):Originally proposed and patented by Google, TLVR stands out as an example of industrial goodwill. Coherent optical technology uses phase, amplitude, and light polarization to dramatically increase data transmission rates and fiber capacity. At the heart of this technology are coherent optical engines, and 5G Technology has an excellent article on how they work. Consisting of digital ASICs, analog electronics, and photonics, these engines use advanced modulation techniques like PM-QPSK and PM-QAM to pack more data into each symbol. These techniques deliver speeds from 100 Gb/s to 800 Gb/s and beyond. The market has split into high-performance embedded engines for long-haul applications and compact pluggables for metro networks. As we push towards 1.6 Tb/s and higher, challenges arise from Shannon's law and spectrum limitations. Solutions include expanding into L-band frequencies and developing Super C and Super L configurations.
