Fact Friday- Is Grandma a -shopper/Klepto ? We lovingly call these seniors, Resident Shoppers. Continual stealing can be a prominent feature of neurological disorders that involve the frontal lobes. The most common cause of pathological stealing appears to be FTD, a common dementia characterized by disinhibition, inertia, lack of empathy, & compulsive behaviors If the person thinks an item should be somewhere and it’s not, this may lead them to think that someone is hiding or stealing things from them. This is a type of delusion. It can be difficult both for the person and those around them. It can help to try see things from their point of view. The person with dementia is trying to make sense of their reality and what is happening.  By hiding and hoarding things, the person may be trying to have some control of their situation. They may feel they need to stockpile items.  So they don't feel a loss when you return the items, if you have observed that someone tends to take jewelry , scarfs, and pictures, you can easily give him or her a shoebox of these items so that they can hold onto them and feel a sense of ownership. In fact, if you would like to get creative, you can make a fun and stimulating activity of the whole process.
