How does an institutional LP decide which GPs to back? UTIMCO alum (and now partner at Foundry) Lindel Eakman opened up about how he picks on Samir Kaji's Venture Unlocked podcast 👇 (episode linked in comments) 🎣 "Would you trust them with your children?" Questions like this one tend to elicit genuine reactions and a real sense of a GP’s character and capabilities. Non-answers or silence in response to a pointed question like this one can be telling. 🤨 "Who fires who?" Questions like this help him evaluate governance and conflict resolution dynamics and the overall stability of the partnership. 1️⃣ Unlike some LPs, Lindel is very open to backing solo GPs. One of the reasons being that partnership risk -- which is one of the biggest when investing in VC funds -- is by definition, eliminated. 👍🏻 Lindel shies away from backing investors who may have potential to be top performers but are divisive or unpleasant to work with. An interesting article below, that demonstrates out how San Diego is punching above its weight.  And how Connect's strategy and execution over time, contintues to be central to that success. The article describes the current state of the market in Seattle.  (And i love Seattle.) It's a market that we tend to track with relative to venture fundings.  They used to kick our butts, we outraised them each of the last three years.  This despite the fact they have 3x as many funds there, and 9x the amount of resident capital there. (per pitchbook) Some key takeaways:  * They continue to compare themselves to SIlicon Valley. Instead, we leverage our proximity. *They whine there's not enough local investors (see note above - they have more than us). We bring over 200 VCs to SD annually! * They say founders are not connected with one another. We bring CEOs together regularly, in a variety of ways - private dinners and through our Springboard program. * They say they need to elevate their image on a national & international stage. Why we created and continue to build Five.Ten.Thirty (aka Inno Day).  * And the last paragraph - they need to concentrate on making their region a great place to live. Our mantra: "It's about Better, not Bigger." Two weeks ago I spent 3 days with brilliant human beings discussing the state of AI investment with other angel syndicate leads, angel investors and VCs at Hustle Fund's #camphustle in Los Gatos. It was brilliant. Truly awesome to learn so much from insanely accomplished investors. But was so clear to me again is that the US and the UK are two countries divided by separate languages of ambition. Aspiration and ambition underlined by the cluster effect of successful exits, incredible talent and venture capital driven by operators and founders rather than accountants. But one reason why the US often trumps (pun not intended) the UK is they learn from failure. Run a startup that didn't reach the dizzying heights of venture-scale returns? Learn, reset and go again. What they certainly do not do is look at failure with glee and an "I told you so" attitude. Which is what I sense when I read most of the narrative around the failure of Cazoo. Alex Chesterman swung and missed. The business was flawed, unit economics didn't add up and in reality - there was very little innovation outside the vertical alignment of a well-understood business. But when we look down upon what he tried to do and 💩 💩 it all we're doing is making it harder for someone else to be equally as ambitious. Focus on what went wrong. Focus on the fundamental underlying business models that drive efficient use of capital and the push for profitability. But let's celebrate people shooting their shot and not celebrate the failures.

Kettleborough VC has been active for ~6 years, invested in ~30 companies, gone through ~80 funding rounds, witnessed ~12 exits including ~4 instances of partial principal erosion, seen ~4 seed to $100M journeys, tracking ~29% XIRR across the portfolio. A couple of IPOs from the portfolio surely seem very much in line ahead.

Everyone loves an underdog. I find this story a delight, it's inspiring and a reminder to have & express #gratitude for the people that have given me much needed shots along the way. It's about Wesley Chan a.k.a VC unicorn (and decacorn) spotter, and his (less talked about) personal story. 💪 Learning #Fortitude: Raised by a hard-working immigrant family taught him to recognize nuances and be #adaptable. His parents split and he was raised by his mother. He worked three jobs in high school - parking lot attendant, a waiter and a dishwasher in a lab at the California Institute of Technology. He got the lab dishwashing job via a Craigslist ad. Ellen Rothenberg, the famed gene biologist was the manager of the lab, and she asked him to read a book on biology. He didn't want to get fired, so read it. He barely took high school biology, but Ellen saw something in him and promoted him to lab bench. Soon enough he was part of a group that discovered a protocol for changing stem cells into red blood cells, and Ellen asked if Chan had thought about college. She called the admissions office and he got into MIT (Harvard said no), bad grades and all. He talks with vulnerability about being an outsider in the business, specifically being part of the tiny LGBTQ+ community in venture capital, trying to build deal flow and the difficulties faced when you don't fit into the country club mold. That's one of the reasons he started FPV Ventures two years ago, with Pegah Ebrahimi. They both have unconventional backgrounds, and with that, bring a unique investing style. He focuses on backing founders with grit and non-traditional backgrounds. “Our founders happen to be underrepresented minorities or women, and the really fascinating theme that I keep hearing is that they feel people misunderstand them,” Chan said. “We find founders who have the drive to succeed and have this amazing combination of humility and success. We’ve been investing for a while but I formally closed my first fund just a few weeks ago. 97212 Ventures Fund I. It’s been an incredible journey from initially thinking through the idea and strategy, building the team, and of course, raising capital for the fund. Raising a first-time fund is incredibly hard, as there’s lots of competition for investor dollars… performance and strong relationships are keys for success. As Michael Bodley at PitchBook writes, high-net-worth individuals have backed emerging managers and micro funds, which have smaller investment minimums. Many of them are family and friends, who see this as not just an exciting investment opportunity, but also a way to support their peers and help them get started. I could not be more fortunate to have an incredible lineup of LPs with me at 97212. They represent every aspect of the industry - they are successful founders, operators, general partners of other VC funds, top executives, bankers, lawyers, doctors, family, and friends. I rely on them not just to back our companies, but when it comes to vetting opportunities, driving customer access, and sharing advice on how to become an amazing investor, consistently.   It’s been a blessing, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the support of our LPs. Thanks Chinenye. I couldn't agree with you more. However while we work on this, we also have to be mindful of the fact that bias isn't just the problem in this data rather a combination of poor economy and bias. Of all these regions mentioned, Africa is the least performing market. therefore Davidson, naturally you would expect investors to do less there. They are not charity organisations but a venture set up for outsized returns.Therefore the major issue we should be discussing is, which sectors are receiving this funding in Africa? Are the investments coming to sectors that will lift the other sectors up fundamentally or to sectors that will window dress the issues? or Worst still the ones that will reap-off on the people and distort rather than disrupt the system. (eg Nigeria POS fintech and the real banking system. a discussion for another day). Until strong investments are made in the technology sectors powering manufacturing strong job growth in Africa be it REAL B2B eCommerce not repeating what is already being done, or B2C eCommerce that is truly efficient and cost effective. Equally important is the improvement in the purchasing power of the consumers via credit card system. in as much as Sub-Sahara Africa lacks good credit system that captures the average citizens and residents, B2C will continue to struggle. in as much as our logistics investments are predominantly in the last mile delivery rather than efficient crosborder logistics, both B2B abd B2C eCommerce will struggle to scale efficiently and profitability. So, it's time for the investors to do away with the low hanging fruits and start tackling the real issues that will empower and propel Africa economies. That's where the main bias lies.

One of my proudest moments as an investor occurred today as Alaffia Health announced its series A because it shows how the Aperture® Venture Capital vision of multi-level, multi-generational #impactinvesting is succeeding in the marketplace.
