A SAFE and convertible note had a baby and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati was the midwife- out popped the D-SAFE! 👶🏽🎉 A new #climatetech funding instrument was announced by Elemental Excelerator last week. One of the company’s main goals is to support smaller, up and coming companies during the awkward “Scale Gap” phase between #VC funding and natural growth. It’s called the #DSAFE (Development Simple Agreement for Future Equity) and it aims to aid the process by giving companies a small amount of cash to overcome initial risks and expenses during the developmental stages of a product launch or company. How does it work? D-SAFE has a redemption clause meaning companies can choose to have their payments offered as a loan or convert to equity at the investor’s discretion. Funders and companies will have clear communication and expectations about where the money is going and how it will be applied to either the company or the projects at hand. Financiers and companies will work together with more #transparency, and that’s a great boon for #startups and VC alike. As of this month, Elemental has already invested using D-SAFE in eight different companies, including Dimensional Energy and Origen — both companies investing in innovative and out-of-the-box solutions to environmental issues! Severe mental illness remains one of the most underserved areas in mental health, possibly because it is difficult to address with the type of virtual, easy-to-scale models that VCs love to back. An interesting article below, that demonstrates out how San Diego is punching above its weight.  And how Connect's strategy and execution over time, contintues to be central to that success. The article describes the current state of the market in Seattle.  (And i love Seattle.) It's a market that we tend to track with relative to venture fundings.  They used to kick our butts, we outraised them each of the last three years.  This despite the fact they have 3x as many funds there, and 9x the amount of resident capital there. (per pitchbook) Some key takeaways:  * They continue to compare themselves to SIlicon Valley. Instead, we leverage our proximity. *They whine there's not enough local investors (see note above - they have more than us). We bring over 200 VCs to SD annually! * They say founders are not connected with one another. We bring CEOs together regularly, in a variety of ways - private dinners and through our Springboard program. * They say they need to elevate their image on a national & international stage. Why we created and continue to build Five.Ten.Thirty (aka Inno Day).  * And the last paragraph - they need to concentrate on making their region a great place to live. Our mantra: "It's about Better, not Bigger." Excited to announce our investment in Alta Resource Technologies alongside Leonardo Banchik (Voyager Ventures) with participation from Orion Resource Partners, Overture Ventures, and WovenEarth Ventures. Rare earths are critical in products from magnets to ceramics and it's important for the US to develop its own supply chain. While the US has some of the best rare earth resources, separating them has historically proven expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Alta through it's computationally designed and optimized proteins allows the US to bring back rare earth production with a cleaner, lower capex, and lower opex solution - and that's just the beginning. From Library Book to Venture Capital: An Unexpected Journey They say success has many fathers, but passion? Passion has just one: curiosity. My path to venture capital wasn't paved with Ivy League connections or a Silicon Valley pedigree. Long long ago… it started with a simple act of determination and a visit to my local library—checking out a single book about venture capital and making a commitment to change everything in my life at the time. While others might have seen a book, I was seeking a roadmap to level up. I put myself on complete lockdown, devouring every page, every insight, every nuanced detail about the world of raising a fund and investing with conviction. My commitment wasn't about finding a career—it was about understanding an ecosystem of innovation and others seeking change. Then came the coffee shops. I'd strategically place that well-worn "VC" book on the table, a beacon for curious minds. And curious they were. Strangers would approach, asking if I was in venture capital. My response was always the same: "Not yet." But something magical happened in those moments. Entrepreneurs would lean in, sharing their dreams, their startup ideas bubbling with potential. Each conversation was like a puzzle piece, slowly revealing the landscape of innovation I was destined to explore. I wasn't just listening—I was learning. Each interaction was a masterclass in entrepreneurial spirit, in the raw potential of human creativity. I was hooked. Completely, irrevocably obsessed. Two decades and 6 funds later… still obsessed. Still saying “not yet”. Venture capital wasn't just a career path—it became my calling. A world where supporting visionary founders could translate raw potential into transformative companies. If you are in the VC space, you should know one of the early drivers of "Moneyball for VC". That's Gopinath Sundaramurthy, Ph.D Gopi partnered with the Kauffman Fellows Fund on implementing these concepts in their investment process. The results were staggering. 50% of the investments the fund made became unicorns. In Gopi's words 👇🏻 "We knew something was working, so we thought: Let's build this a little bigger." What did that look like in practice? 1️⃣ Gopi's firm uses a single ‘source of truth’ platform to centralize information, improving decision-making and consistency. 2️⃣ They maintain an even 50/50 split between data engineers and investors to ensure they leverage data to gain insights into teams, markets, and products. Who wants some data? 📉 The venture capital (VC) industry exhibits significant disparities in funding for female and underrepresented founders, reflecting broader issues of gender and racial inequality in entrepreneurship and tech. Here are the key aspects of this disparity:   1. Funding Gap: - In 2022, companies founded solely by women received only 2% of all VC investment[1]. - All-women teams received just 1.9% ($4.5 billion) of the $283.3 billion available VC funding in 2022[4]. - Women of color received an even smaller share, at just 0.39% of VC funding[4].   2. Representation in VC Firms: - Only about 15% of all VC 'cheque-writers' are women[1]. - Nearly 81% of venture capital firms have never hired a female employee[3].   3. Entrepreneurship Rates: - Women own only 36% of U.S. firms[3]. - The female participation entry rate into entrepreneurship has increased from 7.16% in the early 1990s to just under 11% after 2010[3].   4. Industry-Specific Disparities: - Women make up only 6% of information technology entrepreneurs, which is the industry most backed by venture capital[3]. - Female entrepreneurs typically receive capital for traditionally "feminine" areas, such as fashion or children's products[3].   5. RETHINKING RETIREMENT We've been investing in the Future of Work since we launched BBG Ventures, targeting underserved segments like deskless workers (Anthill, OX) and solopreneurs (Topline Pro). Over the summer we spent time digging into another deeply underserved segment of the workforce: Boomers. By the end of this decade, the entire generation will have hit retirement age and, for the first time, Americans 65+ will outnumber those under 18. This has huge implications for every aspect of society, and it mandates that we start thinking differently about retirement. The question for all of us is this: Can we re-focus healthy Americans 60+ on a new phase of productivity, a “third act” that enables them to keep learning, keep earning, keep socially-engaged and contributing to the nation’s economic growth? And what role can AI play in helping every senior identify their unique skill set and personal priorities — and connect them with the right opportunities? We have some thoughts on how to make this happen, and we'd love you to give it a read, add your feedback, forward it to a founder who's working in this arena (or who you think might be intrigued), and share it! 💰 Women-Led VC Funds: Navigating 2024 Fundraising Landscape 💰 According to Venture Capital Journal, despite a strong start, women-led VC funds are feeling the impact of the industry-wide fundraising slowdown. As of November 30, 2024, women-led VC funds have raised $2.54 billion, which represents a 25% decrease from 2023's total of $3.43 billion. In comparison, global venture fundraising is down 13% YoY.
