Netflix is the latest titan to recognize the value of programmatic advertising with the announcement of its strategy to distribute unsold OTT/CTV ad space across several different providers. The Trade Desk, Google DV360, Magnite are cited as the next batch of providers. Up until now, CTV media buyers had to go through Microsoft Xandr DSP or book with Netflix publisher-direct. It reminds me of the moment when Lamar Advertising Company took the same bold step to ensure their unsold space was programmatically available in top notch, third party SSP platforms like Place Exchange and others. It’s a rite of passage. Expanding the surface area of buy-side and sell-side platforms unlocks massive revenue dollars, when done right. Some of the smartest people in the world of business work at Netflix. This is proof of that. Many hands make light work! 🚀 I attended a fantastic Advertising Week panel featuring our very own Vincent Meyer, Head of Strategic Partnerships, Katie Ingram, Director of Europe at Advertising Week, and Chris Kane, Founder and President of Jounce Media. They dove into a hot topic of MFA. One powerful insight from Chris stood out to me: "MFA publishers didn't just come out of no-where. Advertisers said they wanted viewable inventory, at scale, at low cost and with high CTRs. These publisher got the homework assignment and got an A+. Years later, The industry started scrutinizing these publishers because it turns out they are not contributing to the business objectives of [certain] advertisers." Advertisers need clearer goals. ✅🖥️ AdExchanger (4/24): “The (CTV/ OTT apps) with the best chances are those that can turn their media into a performance marketing channel with targeting and attribution that looks and feels like digital advertising – at least according to investors on Wall Street, said Laura Martin, senior media and internet analyst at Needham & Company. The way investors see it, upper-funnel advertising alone simply isn’t good enough for streaming to be valuable. Platforms have to be able to attribute actual business outcomes to their ad inventory, or risk losing out to the competition. It’s also harder to earn a profit in streaming because there’s less ad inventory compared to linear TV. But in their quest for outcomes-based measurement, streaming platforms are transforming into mini walled gardens with vaults of viewership and audience data under lock and key, according to Martin. Which certainly goes against the buy-side push for more transparency into streaming data and inventory, she added. Some platforms are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Great article from The Wall Street Journal Sarah Krouse and Antenna data. This should put an even greater emphasis on the cancellation process (or even better pause process) as well as new ways to win them back. Can’t be about making it hard to leave because consumers will remember that when the next show they want to watch is back (what does “must-see” mean anymore?) perhaps without the need of governemnts “assistance” in getting us there. And to the broader point of the article and Antennas work, Reclaim will join Retain as the third foot for a successful business model (joining Win of course) The opportunity to provide a more holistic, simpler experience for the consumer is right in front of us and just requires industry players to reject the “but that’s not how weve done things” mentality. From subscription management to content discovery - it all comes back to making the experience simpler for the consumer. Streaming is surpassing cable, and it's likely due to the control that viewers have over what they watch and when (along with other factors). I know I sure do subscribe to quite a few services which gets expensive. IAB CEO David Cohen told Axios, "I think that there's a lot to be said for the power of the bundle. Consumers are not going to subscribe to seven or eight things, they simply can't afford that." We have to start adding layers. Investing in streaming isn't enough — we also need to add bundles that make financial sense to consumers who are now faced with the task of choosing which services they can afford. #IAB #Streaming #Bundles #StreamingServices
