As I revisit some of the best articles I’ve read this year, I came across an insightful piece about Bitcoin’s anonymity early in 2024. Despite the growing popularity of Bitcoin, there are still many misconceptions about its privacy features. Bitcoin has often been touted as an anonymous digital currency, but this is a myth. While Bitcoin transactions are pseudonymous, meaning they are linked to addresses rather than personal identities, they are far from untraceable. Sarah Meiklejohn’s research has demonstrated that Bitcoin transactions can be tracked, leading to significant law enforcement actions against cybercriminals. It’s important to understand that Bitcoin’s design prioritizes transparency over complete anonymity. Every transaction is recorded on a public ledger, the blockchain, which anyone can access. This transparency is crucial for ensuring the integrity of the Bitcoin network but also means that transactions can be traced back to individuals, especially when combined with other data. While I remain neutral on cryptocurrencies, I believe the concentration of cryptocurrency ownership is a significant issue. A small number of individuals and entities hold a large proportion of Bitcoin, which can lead to market manipulation and other economic concerns. While Bitcoin offers some level of privacy, it is not the anonymous haven many believe it to be. As the cryptocurrency landscape evolves, it’s essential to stay informed and understand the limitations and implications of these digital assets.

Open source philosophical conflict. Deekseek released a new open source model recently, and it's really good. It's also super fast, and really cheap. The weights are open source. Some have noted it appears to be over-fitting in some areas, and also returns results inline with Chinese regulation. Given the consumer policy history of Chinese SaaS companies, I get a little concerned that the inputs will fuel a new level of insights about foreign nationals for the Chinese government. Of note, the privacy policy allows inputs to be used for training, and unlike many other services there is currently no way to opt out for either the chat ui or the API. I am a huge fan of open source, and love the open source weights from DeepSeek, but remember the only way to shield your information training is to use a hosted version that does not forward inputs.

Because of high fees + volatility + risk + #L2s that are better for builders; the ETF gave ETH investors (token holders) a way to move $$$ off chain #Web3 into TradFi brokerage accounts.

Benjamin Nudel always has thoughtful, data-driven commentary on crypto, and his 2025 predictions are worth reading. He's more optimistic than I am on BTC/ETH, alt rotation and institutional DeFi engagement, but directionally I agree, and I hope I am wrong and he is right on the magnitude of the shifts in the new year, as those would be great outcomes!
