I've seen countless startups stumble on regulatory strategy - it's painful, expensive, and often avoidable. The seminar shared by David Pudwill and Geetha Rao hosted by UCSF Innovation Ventures, absolutely nailed what matters most. Here are my key takeaways that every founder should know: 1. Lexington Books managed to release my book Disagreeing despite the Data before the election. It argues the belief segregation underway in the US may be irreversible. Today's battles over climate change, disease mitigation, and election results run deep -- they're cognitive, not just strategic. Here's the gist of it. 20th-century revolutions in the philosophy of mind, meaning, and matter uncover three surprising requirements for widespread factual agreement. Critical thinking and community building have the potential to reverse two of them -- the growing refusal to test assumptions and individual isolation. Factual agreement between groups is impossible without the third one, though -- shared projects or other meaningful interaction. And a large part of American society has insulated itself from the rest. Without shared projects, communities gradually lose the ability to tell whether they agree or not regardless of the words they use. Belief segregation with similar roots has led several developing countries to the brink of failure. We'd better watch out. I recently spoke with an executive from one of the largest healthcare companies in the country.   When I asked them what are the highest priority problems they're concentrating on right now, unsurprisingly, 1️⃣ controlling costs around GLP1s came up first. But surprisingly, 2️⃣ the intersection of health and climate change came up second! It is clear that more healthcare leaders are beginning to think about (and respond to!) the deep interdependence of human and environmental health.   🗣 While my climate friends have long emphasized that "climate is a horizontal," and "there's no such thing as a climate company; all companies will have to adapt to climate change", I'm energized to hear more of these conversations beginning in healthcare.   😷 We already know that wildfires and air pollution are driving increases in respiratory and chronic illnesses, that heat waves and natural disasters are putting more lives at risk, and that rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns are enabling the spread of infectious diseases.   As we invest in downstream solutions that support patients suffering from respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, anxiety, depression, and general gaps in gaps in health equity, we're also thinking about holistic, upstream factors, like the effects of climate change.   ⚕ 🤝 🌎 How should we evolve our traditional notions of preventive health to address these emerging challenges? ⚕ 🤝 🌎 How can health-first organizations play their part when it comes to the climate crisis? ⚕ 🤝 🌎 What are the innovative ideas you've seen around climate, sustainability, and human health?  💡 This is both a personal area of interest and something I'm hoping we get to explore more at Inflect! Lovitch The recently introduced California Bill (AB-3129) aims to curb the price increases and lower service quality often linked to such acquisitions. Key Highlights: 🔸 Mandatory Reviews: Private equity groups and hedge funds must notify the AG 90 days before any transaction involving a health care facility or provider group. The AG can extend this period by 45 days, potentially delaying transactions. 🔸 Conditional Approvals: The AG can grant, deny, or impose conditions on transactions if they are likely to have anticompetitive effects or significantly impact access to health care services. 🔸 Prohibitions on Management: The bill restricts physician and psychiatric practices from entering management agreements with private equity or hedge fund-controlled entities. Impact on Digital Health Adoption: The increased scrutiny could slow down the adoption of digital health solutions, as transactions involving tech investments may face delays and additional costs. However, it could also ensure that such innovations prioritize patient care over profit. AI and Med Tech in Focus   AI System Developed to Identify Pathology in Tissues Engineers at Washington State University have developed an AI tool that uses images of human and animal tissue to detect abnormalities faster and more accurately than people. The AI algorithm was trained using images from past studies that involved kidney, testes, ovarian, prostate, breast and lymph node abnormalities. The new model detected disease in minutes—current processes take humans several hours and require specialized teams to check each other’s work. It was also found to be more accurate, sometimes detecting instances that humans had missed. The engineers designed the system to handle the processing load of the high-resolution gigapixel images by breaking them down into smaller tiles but still retaining the overall context of the tissue sample—akin to the zoom feature on a microscope or phone camera. Aside from getting diagnostic results more accurately and quickly, the new system also shows promise in epigenetics (the study of molecular processes that change gene behavior without changing underlying DNA). Epigenetic researchers can perform analyses and get results that used to take a year or more in just a couple of weeks. The (Healthcare) Ground Beneath Our Feet… This year it is likely that over $10 billion will be invested in the digital health sector – a robust amount, no doubt, but inconsequential when compared to the amount of capital tied up in healthcare real estate assets, which is estimated to be $1.2 trillion by Jones Lang Lasalle. Of that amount, approximately $790 billion is in the hospital sector while the remaining $490 billion is in medical office assets. It is estimated that there are 48.6k facilities with 3.4 billion square feet of healthcare real estate, 42% of which are owned by REITs and another 33% held by other private investment vehicles. Much of the digital health investment is meant to make the physical healthcare infrastructure more productive: greater operating efficiencies, greater patient throughput, more relevant personalized care models with better outcomes. As the healthcare system is being pushed to be more distributed to lower cost sites of care, accelerated now by the rapid proliferation of automation and AI capabilities, the potential impact on healthcare infrastructure assets will be profound. Exciting news! We just sent out the inaugural newsletter for Future Frontier Capital, our pre-seed venture fund backing frontier tech startups. Excited to announce our investment in Alta Resource Technologies alongside Leonardo Banchik (Voyager Ventures) with participation from Orion Resource Partners, Overture Ventures, and WovenEarth Ventures. Rare earths are critical in products from magnets to ceramics and it's important for the US to develop its own supply chain. While the US has some of the best rare earth resources, separating them has historically proven expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Alta through it's computationally designed and optimized proteins allows the US to bring back rare earth production with a cleaner, lower capex, and lower opex solution - and that's just the beginning.
