The transition from high school into postsecondary education and a career has become particularly challenging given today’s complex, fast-moving, and highly technological economy. To combat this problem, one approach widely adopted is the career academy model, which combines a college-preparatory and career and technical curriculum with a career theme and is often structured as a small learning community within a larger high school. A landmark MDRC randomized controlled trial of career academies, starting in the mid-1990s, found sustained earnings gains for academy participants in the eight years after expected high school completion. Shifts in the labor market, reforms to secondary education, and a growth in both high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment rates across the United States prompt new questions about how participating in career academies may affect current students’ academic and labor outcomes. To answer these questions, MDRC is conducting a long-term randomized controlled trial of California Partnership Academies (CPAs), which are partially state-funded career academies within high schools across California. This report explores the impacts of CPAs on students’ high school graduation and college readiness at the end of high school as well as their college enrollment during the first year after graduation.

Doug Lynch, founder of the USC EdTech Accelerator, is leading an innovative initiative in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Office of Education-LACOE. The project, titled the Innovation Lab, aims to facilitate direct interaction between ed-tech developers and educators, allowing for the practical testing and refinement of educational tools within actual classroom settings. This collaboration seeks to enhance the implementation and effectiveness of ed-tech solutions, addressing the real-world challenges faced by educators and students. All students—regardless of background—deserve to learn the computational thinking skills necessary to navigate online life with confidence and with a critical eye. While the 2024-25 CA education budget doesn't introduce new computer science-specific funding, it does maintain support for key initiatives that benefit CS education and drive equitable, high-quality experiences for all students. Good news from So. Cal: a collaboration of 13 California colleges and institutes launches the innovative Blue Economy and Climate Action Pathways Conference. By 2030, the blue economy is projected to more than double its contribution to gross value added, reaching over $3 trillion. According to reports from the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, ocean-related industries, such as aquaculture, directly employ over 100,000 workers and generate over $13 billion in regional output. Through a $1.1 million grant from Los Angeles Regional Consortium, the BECAP project aims to close the workforce gap with curriculum and new programme development, faculty and professional development, and the generation of a BECAP college to career pathway. CSU Los Angeles receives $370,000 from the state to develop a culturally responsive support system to ensure equitable success for AANHPI students. The state grant is a part of $8 million directed by Assembly Bill 190 to expand culturally responsive support for underserved students across the California State University system. An federally-recognized AANHPI-serving institution, Cal State LA’s Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Student Achievement Program supports the needs of AANHPI transfer students in achieving two-year graduation outcomes. Funding will be used in part to facilitate cross-campus collaboration and to develop Student Learning Communities to improve the retention rates for first-year first-time AANHPI students, addressing declining enrollment and expanding outreach and recruitment. They seek to cultivate a sense of belonging on campus through increased peer connections through the sharing of academic and cultural knowledge and skills. Part of the state grant will also be directed to student affairs programming and AANHPI-focused campus groups, including the Asian Pacific Islander Student Resource Center (APISRC), the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies, and the AAPI Faculty and Staff Affinity Group. “To ensure that the AANHPI students succeed at equitable rates, we will raise awareness of and offer support to subgroups within the AANHPI community without viewing them as one monolithic group,” said Andre Ellis, associate vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Make no mistake--these groups are being funded and encouraged by #Iran, #Quatar and other #Hamas-related groups. Questions: - Why are so many universities tolerating such acts of violence and lawbreaking? - Why are these students not being suspended or expelled? - What is the universities' failure to enforce their own rules teaching students about appropriate ways to debate and disagree? - - And why is our government not demanding transparency about the over $14B in gifts to US universities, often with strings attached, from Quatar and other foreign entities?
