Here is an interesting read shared with me today by my colleague Nicholas Ziganto, PE regarding the potential future of gas detection. In a study supported by MIT's Climate and Sustainability Consortium (MCSC), the Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab (J-WAFS) at MIT, and the U.S. Department of Energy, the article in shares that "The new system combines two existing technologies, bringing them together in a way that preserves the advantages of each while avoiding their limitations. The team used a material called a metal-organic framework, or MOF, which is highly sensitive to tiny traces of gas but whose performance quickly degrades and combined it with a polymer material that is highly durable and easier to process, but much less sensitive." Proud to share our collaborative efforts with ENOWA on exploring demand flexibility in hydrogen production! Our research demonstrates the potential of hydrogen electrolyzers to revolutionize grid operations by integrating PEM and AEL hydrogen technologies with renewable energy sources like PV and battery systems. In short, we developed a stochastic optimization framework to enhance grid flexibility using hydrogen electrolyzers as demand-flexible resources & modeled in real-time grid networks to showcase how dynamically adjusting electrical and physical parameters boosts flexibility. The integration of hydrogen systems with PV and BESS significantly reduced operational costs and improved grid stability. A huge thanks to the stellar team from KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) and ENOWA for their dedication and innovation. 🌍 Exploring the Future of Avian Diversity Monitoring with AI & IoT 🌍 Proud to share our latest study on how environmental factors impact bird diversity and vocal behavior, leveraging cutting-edge IoT sensors and BirdNet’s deep learning capabilities! Our MINTS-AI sensor network, deployed across Dallas, Texas, has enabled us to gather unique insights into how temperature, humidity, light intensity, and airborne particulate matter influence bird species such as the Northern Mockingbird, Mississippi Kite, Canada Goose, and House Finch. Notable findings include: • There appears to be a sweet spot temperature range for birds to sing between 20 to 30ºC (68 to 86ºF) • 📈 Winter: Positive correlation between bird diversity and temperature (r = 0.65 in 2023, r = 0.80 in 2024) • 📉 Summer: Negative correlation with temperature (r = -0.63 in 2023, r = -0.34 in 2024) • 💧 Humidity: Strong ties with vocal activity in moisture-dependent species • ☀️ Light Intensity: Direct influence on vocal behavior of certain species Our study highlights the potential of this IoT-based approach to monitor the impact of climate change on avian populations over time. Dispatch #1 from the 15th Annual IEEE International Conference on Green Energy & Smart Systems How can we build zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) ecosystems of the future?     Last month, I was honored to join industry leaders from American Honda Motor Company, Inc., Toyota Motor Corporation, Evolectric - CircularEV™ Solutions, the California Hydrogen Business Council, Sunstone Management, and the CSULB College of Engineering as part of an expert panel to address that mission-critical question. In collaboration with co-moderator, CSULB Interim Associate Vice President of Research Barbara Taylor, we convened "Building a Zero-Emission Vehicle Ecosystem" as part of the 15th Annual IEEE International Conference on Green Energy & Smart Systems (GESS 2024), which took place in Long Beach November 4-5, 2024.     The State of California mandates that, by 2030, 68% of new cars sold in the state must be electric, plug-in hybrid electric, or hydrogen fuel cell. Five years later, that percentage goes to 100. On the freight side, by 2035 all drayage trucks, responsible for moving containers to and from the Long Beach Los Angeles Port Complex, must also meet zero-emission standards. Really excited to be selected to be sitting on the program committee for IEEE Big Data 2024 for the 9th Computational Archival Science (CAS) Workshop. Marine Cloud Brightening (#MCB), is a proposed approach to improve the world’s safety and security amid a changing climate. However, significant uncertainties, related in part to challenges to modeling both the natural processes that underlie MCB and proposed MCB approaches, are a barrier to advancing our understanding. In a paper published in Geoscientific Model Development, Phil J. Rasch, Haruki Hirasawa, Mingxuan Wu, Sarah J. Doherty, Robert Wood, Hailong Wang, Andy Jones, James Haywood and Hansi Singh, define a new protocol that allows researchers to configure MCB simulations in a standardized and more realistic way. This is critical to enable comparison of how climate responds to equivalent implementations of MCB across different models – and, ultimately, identify which responses appear to be robust and which are less certain. This new protocol marks a significant advance in coordinating MCB research, with the potential to both further science and expand participation by researchers globally. It is part of the work supported under SilverLining’s Safe Climate Research Initiative and ARISE modeling program and through the University of Washington’s MCB Program, which is funded by the generous support of a growing consortium of individual and foundation donors. Why are #digitaltwins important to the #spaceeconomy? Takeaways (1) NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration created the earliest digital twins in the 1960s. (2) The connection of a digital twin to its physical equivalent is made by a thread of data, and as processing power, sensors, and #bigdata analysis improves, that link strengthens. The state-of-the-art used to connect these threads across #space and large infrastructure will be necessary for the safety, planning, maintenance, and optimization of Billion-dollar assets far from home. (3) Optimizing the work and performance of semi-autonomous #satellites, robots, and other tools on our future #Moon bases l, commercial space stations, and mining and metal processing operations will be a necessity for both fidelity and safety reasons. (4) By continuously studying the information provided, the digital twin can forecast risks and, using #AI, recommend steps to take in real-time to help mitigate or avoid them.
