The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has several requirements for safety line anchorages, including: Supporting capacity Anchorages must be able to support at least 5,000 pounds per employee attached. Independence Anchorages must be separate from any anchorages used to support or suspend platforms. Dee-rings and snaphooks Dee-rings and snaphooks must have a minimum tensile strength of 5,000 pounds. They must also be proof-tested to a minimum tensile load of 3,600 pounds without cracking, breaking, or permanent deformation. Mobile work platforms Anchorages for mobile work platforms on powered industrial trucks must be attached to an overhead member of the platform, above and near the center. Anchorages can be: Engineered systems designed specifically for fall protection Secure connection points on existing structures Anchorage connectors, which are secure attachment points for lifelines, lanyards, or deceleration devices Anchorages can vary by industry, job, type of installation, and structure. If you see any damage to an anchorage, you should: Alert your Competent Person Take the anchor out of service immediately Have the Competent Person determine if it is still safe to use

Remember folks, just because nobody was injured, that does not mean a violation did not occur. If there was or is an "exposure", OSHA can, and will impose civil penalties/fines. In some severe cases, managers and supervisors can be charged with manslaughter in involuntary manslaughter. Get quality training for your workforce. How to use OSHA standards to solve safety issues. Safety means rules & regulations. OSHA standards can help you tremendously to revamp safety system & achieve your business goals. Example Referring back to safety case study i posted at my LinkedIn, if you were safety officer assigned on that project & trained & skilled in OSHA, you would have been referring 1926.650, 1926.651 & 1926.652 trenching & excavation requirements while talking to management & developing activity specific SOP. Your point would be more powerful when you talk to stake holders based on OSHA regulations. More powerful, more credible, more convincing. There is a good chance you are wasting your time as a Safety Professional. Documented Audits, walkthroughs, reports, assessments, endless emails, calculating statistics, data, data, data 96% of all of this data that gets collected just sits around, not being utilized in any meaningful way. Then spends the rest of it’s miserable existence collecting dust. Then it dies because it’s time for another audit to be performed, walkthrough to be done, report to be written, email to be composed, more stats to be calculated. Do not make data for the sake of data. If you collect the information, use it. Don’t just put it in the system or pass it along to the ‘higher-ups’. Pass that information onto the people that need it, not just those that want it. Uptick in minor hand issues- explain it to the workers, then get them the appropriate gloves, then ensure that they are using them properly. Increase in foreign bodies in eyes- explain it to the workers, then give them upgraded eye protection- maybe goggles or spoggles. Then ensure that they are using them properly. You might want to look at ‘dust control methods, as well. More workers complaining of headaches from loud noises- explain it to the workers, give them the correct hearing protection, then ensure that they are using them properly. Also look and see if it necessary to have that equipment on during work hours. Are you seeing a pattern here.

Within a few minutes consultants and safety professionals have taken that information and turned the new information into training, a 30 minute or six hour power point $75-$800 dollars later you now have the information that was available on the OSHA website. The best money maker of recent was COVID-19, where invoices were written for more than $20,000. dollars for doing nothing more to show up to a facility where a product list, signs, barricades, and training was provided. As an consultant your want to make money watch for regulation changes or CDC advisories and sell your knowledge. May is Mental Health Awareness month. How can we as safety professionals identify someone in crisis at our job sites? As a safety professional, identifying someone in crisis at your job site is crucial. Here are some steps you can share with your field leadership: Observe Behavior Changes: Pay attention to any significant changes in behavior. Look for signs of withdrawal, isolation, anger, or depression. If an employee seems disengaged from the team, invite them back into the fold. Know the Warning Signs: Familiarize yourself with common warning signs of mental health issues. These may include: Extreme Mood Swings: Rapid shifts between extreme highs and lows. Social Withdrawal: Isolation from colleagues or avoiding social interactions. Changes in Work Performance: A sudden decline in productivity or quality of work. Physical Symptoms: Frequent headaches, fatigue, or unexplained physical pain. Verbal Clues: Expressing feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, or suicidal thoughts. Provide Resources: Ensure that employees know about available mental health resources. Share information about employee assistance programs (EAPs), counseling services, and crisis hotlines. Train Front-Line Leaders: Equip front-line supervisors with the knowledge to address employees in crisis. Encourage them to approach individuals who exhibit signs of distress and offer support. It is important to begin the process of accountability for employees and leadership. One EHS Department or one safety professional cannot do it all. However, one can build programming, educate, train, empower, get resources and provide administrative needs. With my upcoming departure approaching, I felt it necessary to provide in-house processes for safety inspections. Many organizations lack an understanding around inspections. Yes, safety professionals should provide the expertise but the workers and their supervisors also provide a closer perspective and even a preventative hand in the process. Today our department meets with both top senior leaders such as myself as well as middle management for all of the lines of business within Facility Management. I choose to utilize my safety moments in staff meetings to further educate, provide resource and empower all levels of leadership. After nearly 2 years here and an analysis of the current safety culture, I feel this department is ready for accountability like this.
