Congrats to Alycia Drwencke with the Tucker Lab at UC Davis on her recent publication! Grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute.
I believe, a great example of sharing research results even when the outcome wasn't what you had hoped for...avoiding +Publication Bias.
I effectively used ethanol epidurals in practice to address post-calving pelvic pain and was sure this was going to be a game changer!
Thanks to the disciplined, thoughtful and deliberate design and execution of the study, it changed my game, but not in the way I thought it would.
How has my game changed?
1. I am over dehorning (disbudding) - at this point we need supply chain and industry efforts to focus on adopting polled genetics. I have seen 3000 cow herds that are now 100% polled. There is truly no reason 100% of herds should not be actively incorporating polled genetics. This will support progress to advance the trait further.
2. I am over paste - Yup, that is right. I have come full circle. Early in practice, I learned to hate paste. It was rarely used correctly and caused more problems than it solved. Then, we finally realized, if used, it must be EARLY. Applied at day 1-3, we seemed to avoid some of the problem of calves rubbing off the paste. No regrowth if done early, and easier than hot iron when pain mitigation was not being given. Yay! (for ease of application, not for lack of pain management)
But man, healing time for paste is nearly 2x as long! And that is when you don't use too much, which many people do. And many continue to use paste WITHOUT pain relief because they think it is not needed.
We know better now!
A local anesthetic is a must, as are post-op pain meds, no matter what method! The facts are in, disbudding is a pain, for you and the calf!
So, if you are using a local, why not use the method that works 100% of the time and heals faster?
Yes, you need the right equipment. Yes, you need to restrain. But you need to restrain for the local too. And yes, you get the benefit of knowing it is done right while avoiding the pain of paste getting rubbed on you, other calves or into eyes or other parts.
Better yet just used polled!
Let's face it, the only one who hates disbudding more than the caregiver is the calf! Let's move towards polled!
Until then, let's make sure to use a local and anti-inflammatory. If I was going to pick a method today, I have to admit I would be back, full circle and be opting for hot iron, the earlier the better.
