The Presidio Trust’s Associate Director of Natural Resources Lewis Stringer recently served on the steering committee for the Golden Gate Biosphere Network’s Climate Vulnerability Assessment. The Assessment was developed in partnership with many other organizations, including our partners within the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and identifies Presidio habitats - coastal sand dunes and salt marshes, along with species such as the red-legged frog, Olympia oysters, and native butterflies - as highly vulnerable to climate change. This report will help Bay Area land managers, and the public protect these at-risk sites while the Presidio’s stewardship efforts continue to safeguard these vital habitats and species. Weather advisory update as of 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024: With the National Weather Service’s red flag warning in effect for leeward communities through 4 p.m. today, Hawaiian Electric remains ready to proactively shut off power, if necessary, as part of our Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program. Power remains ON in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk, however PSPS determinations can change at any time based on weather conditions. Please be advised that outages not related to our PSPS program could occur due to other conditions. Follow us on social media or our mobile app. WHAT WE’RE DOING • Deploying observers to monitor conditions and look out for any fire risks  • Pre-positioning Hawaiian Electric crews and their equipment to speed restoration  • Coordinating with state and county emergency response officials  • Urging customers to prepare for possible power outages with safety as their top priority PSPS PROCESS • If power is shut off, it will remain off so long as hazardous weather conditions persist.  • When the weather improves, power lines must be inspected and any damage must be repaired before service can be restored. This may involve ground crews and aerial inspections using helicopters and drones.  • This process may result in extended outages lasting several hours, possibly even days depending on the location and extent of any damage. ETS@Sacramento's second Keynote Presentation: A World of Wildfires 🔥 Caroline Thomas Jacobs, Director of the Office of Office of Energy Infrastructure Safety for the State of California, shared valuable insights on wildfire management and the progress made over the last five years. She noted, "A lot has changed, and a significant amount of progress has been made in dealing with wildfires. The ability of utilities to collect, store, and analyze massive amounts of information has been completely overhauled. ✨Year in Review: March 2024✨ DETR awarded Nevadaworks & Workforce Connections Grants to Address Barriers to Employment. DETR was one of 12 state workforce agencies awarded this Quality Jobs, Equity, Strategy, and Training Disaster Recovery National Dislocated Worker Grants from the US Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. The two workforce boards were able to reach out to underserved individuals and dislocated workers, ensuring they are aware of grant-funded activities and have the opportunity to enroll in them. “DETR chose these priority populations due to the vast number of individuals in the state who could benefit from enhanced efforts to reduce barriers to their employment including transportation, awareness of available services, wraparound supports, and opportunities,” said Kristine Nelson, Employment Security Division administrator at DETR. “Barriers such as these increase the vulnerabilities these populations face. It’s #NationalRiversMonth, a time to highlight projects helping to keep rivers healthy, mitigate flooding, and deliver the clean, reliable water communities need to thrive. Case in point: a $1.7 billion project by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (Regional San) to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant. Regional San named the upgrade “EchoWater” to help “bring back” #WaterQuality in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta while meeting state-mandated requirements in its discharge permit. The delta is a critical water resource – supplying communities and businesses across Central and Southern California while supporting a vast and fragile ecosystem as well as recreational opportunities enjoyed by millions. A primary feature of the EchoWater project is its biological nutrient removal (#BNR) complex designed by Black & Veatch. Nutrient pollution is a major issue for waterways and watersheds nationwide. The EchoWater BNR treatment complex solves the issue in the delta by producing a stable effluent with nearly all ammonia and most nitrate removed yet with low aeration and carbon requirements.
