We gathered dozens of operators from the MGMT Boston Operators Club and local founders alongside the 186 Ventures team this October to discuss the evolution of our dear software markets, the status of some predictions for 2024 (all looking good!), and what’s on deck for next year. General Partner Giuseppe Stuto led us through the following predictions for 2025 to share with you all.. ↕ We will see more vertical AI applications manifest themselves within the Enterprise in a similar ways that SaaS moved from horizontal to vertical use cases 🔔 We will see services business models more common and software budget purchasing models less common - SaaS may even be given away for cheap/free as a “way in” ⚖ Capital efficiency, on a relative basis, will almost be required to create enduring & compounding defensible enterprise value. Details like procurement cycle lengths and creativity with non-dilutive financing, like leveraging revenue based financing tools for example, will all matter 💡 Specific to AI, premiums will be placed on applications that can actually get “reasoning” right. All purpose LLMs still have a ways to go and there are multiple approaches with the “jury still out” on how to get context and reasoning right. Infrastructure solutions that use general purpose or customizable knowledge graphs to help application developers get to 100% (enterprise acceptable accuracy) will emerge OR savvy application developers will fill the gaps themselves. We recently led a $9.5M seed round in Zeno, our very first energy transition company in Africa. Michael Spencer and the team are now officially out of stealth sprinting towards their first products - a swappable battery compatible with an electric motorbike of their own design. Their opening market is Kenya, where 3M+ boda boda taxi drivers are eager to find ways to shave costs down. With Zeno's battery subscription model, they'll make 50% in savings compared to owning a petrol counterpart! Going electric will soon become the obvious choice. Kenya is just the start. Over the next quarter century, Africa will be home to the largest share of young people in the world, and is set to double its population to 2.5 billion. Talk about a growth market. Zeno has a particularly special place in our hearts because Harsh Dubey, who hustled his way into Lowercarbon Capital right out of college and became an institution around here, built up so much conviction in this company that he's moved abroad to work on this rocketship full-time. Endeavor CEO says long-term capital needs to be prioritized in emerging ecosystems Venture capital has become a more global industry as the tech sector slowly decentralizes. In 2022, more than 50% of VC deployed globally was invested in startups outside the U.S., according to data available from the National Science Foundation (NSF) -- a stark contrast to 20 years ago, when nearly 80% of the world’s venture capital went into U.S. companies. Countries like China, India, Israel and the U.K. have led the charge in this shift, but smaller ecosystems across Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa are also paying a part. Today, some 26% of the world's unicorns are in these markets, according to a report by Endeavor Global, the organization that works with founders to build companies around the world with economic or social impact. This is some good work John Cowan. The venture studio is what the 'old guard' vcs used to be. So much of what we have now is 'venture-nistas' - folks that fashionably label themselves vcs, but they aren't good at adding value/de-risking a select portfolio of new ventures (the old guard vc/venture studio model), nor are they particularly capable of deploying capital well as financial buyers/investors - for all the reasons you've cited. Investors are partly to blame, as they get caught up in FOMO just like GPs, mis-allocating risk capital to sketchy funds or deals, based on teh well-documented optics that fuel FOMO. I would offer that the remaining gap in funding startups is a more professional risk-management approach at the portfolio level, that is scalable and can deploy larger $'s without sacrificing alpha (in fact creating repeatable alpha vs. the reliance on the Power Law). The absolute volume and acceleration of the formation of new startups requires vastly more capital, deployed better than the current system and practices can provide today. It is possible

Our view on the current venture capital markets. Curious to hear other investors' thoughts but I feel like seed stage valuation, at least in the gaming and entertainment sectors, has finally come down to the pre-covid level. Since February or March this year, we started seeing that the founders are willing to raise a $1-2m seed round at a $10m-ish valuation, not like $4-5m at $20-25m in 2022 and 2023. What are you guys seeing?

I have expressed incredulity with news stories from the The Information and they have proven me wrong so this report is truly shocking. Bolt was valued in a peak market Series E in early 2022 at over $11 billion by BlackRock then almost fully written down in 2023 (as many seemed to indicate there was limited revenue or a business model) and now the company is raising $450 million of capital from investors in the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom at a $14 billion valuation? What am I missing here? But as we grew, and got to better know our LPs, portfolio companies, and the ecosystem at large, we saw they kept coming back for advice on growth, or market analysis, or access to new forms of capital. That’s why I’m pleased to reintroduce this amazing organization as MobilityVC, which better captures our expanded capabilities and commitments to our partners. We offer advisory services to private and publicly traded companies – providing targeted transaction support for direct investments, acquisitions, technology licensing and product commercialization. This includes sourcing, due diligence, negotiation, integration and fundraising support. We’ve been successfully running a corporate venture capital program – sources startups, performs diligence and runs POCs on behalf of major OEMs. We have grown our funding capabilities to include SPVs & growth stage capital –  supporting companies as they scale, by establishing dedicated investment vehicles, allowing our LPs additional choice and transparency in their investments. And of course we still proudly invest in early stage investments – MobilityFund II is actively deploying capital into disruptive, seed and pre-seed investments across the mobility and automotive landscape, having just reached its second close milestone thanks to new partners like Jæger Group.
