Track lifting and tamping operations are the most basic maintenance operation methods to solve the unevenness of the line. There are currently two commonly used on-site operation methods: one is that experienced foremen use their eyes to lift and tamp tracks; the other is to use the level to measure and calculate, use the adjacent line rails as the standard to make the elevation, and perform track lifting and tamping operations according to the elevation in the skylight point. These two operation methods have great disadvantages. One is that even experienced foremen are prone to lifting or slipping when lifting tracks. After the operation, there is a large deviation between the line level and the level measurement data; the other is to use the adjacent line rails as the elevation, and lift the track in the skylight. It is necessary to measure the elevation of the adjacent line, which poses a great safety hazard and affects the progress of the operation. At the same time, due to the lack of light at night and the difficulty of observation at the skylight point, the effect of track lifting and tamping is poor. Therefore, the use of infrared laser alignment measuring instruments using the theory of three points and one line can be used for high-precision track lifting and tamping operations, effectively reducing the problem of errors in visual track lifting and tamping at night through the skylight. Basic principles and characteristics of rail laser alignment measuring Device. The infrared Rail laser alignment measuring instrument consists of three parts: laser emitter, mobile target and target target. The instrument is fixed on the outer side of the rail head (taking into account the problem of flying edge on the working side). 1. The laser emitter is modified from a laser theodolite. The current effective measurement distance is between 5-30 meters. The maximum imaging radius of the laser point is 1mm, which can meet the high-precision and long-distance track setting operation. 2. The mobile target and target target use movable target heads, which can measure straight lines and perform curve setting operations through calculation. 3. The design structure of the instrument fixing frame is simple, easy to level and convenient to operate.

Shipyard Trivia: Locomotive Cranes – Steel Wheeled Beasts of Burden By Marcus W. Robbins, NNSY Historian & Archivist Shipyards have used various methods to move materials since their beginning. The very nature of the materials utilized within the trades are heavy, awkward and most times difficult to place. Manual labor could only go so far. Animal labor such as beasts of burden (oxen and horses) could only do so much also because Norfolk Navy Yard continued to service larger ships over time, which required the use of dry docks. Due to that change, both man and beast’s abilities to perform larger and heavier tasks decreased so cranes became the way of the future. Wind gusts were up to 27 miles/hour. 3 ironworkers died, they scrapped a $20+ million crane, and created $100 million in structural damages. Operators sub load capacity charts with the LMI – Load Moment Indicator. LMI is a safety device. It cannot sense inadequate ground support, amount of counterweights, boom & rigging configuration. *The machine was situated on soft ground. Use load charts and don't operate past what the machine can handle.
