NERC recommends adding 35,000 MW of interregional transmission capacity as "prudent additions" to address grid resiliency needs! Note that this assessment solely focuses on energy adequacy and the level of assistance likely available from neighboring regions during resiliency challenges, such as winter storms. The study does not, for example, consider: 1️⃣ Resilience support available from regions beyond the immediate neighbors (such as PJM's exports to SPP during winter storm Elliot). 2️⃣ A multi-value perspective that takes into account the added economic and public-policy benefits of interregional transmission, which often justify expanding interregional transmission beyond these NERC results (as DOE's National Transmission Planning Study has most recently shown). Two USA Department of Energy papers on DER integration. These papers offer practical frameworks to examine the architectural, technical, and engineering economics of the various sourcing (i.e., tariffs, programs, procurements, and flexibility markets) and orchestration mechanisms (i.e., dispatch, autonomous, and behavioural) to more fully utilize DER services for distribution, not just for the bulk power system. They provide a systematic approach based on earlier Grid Architecture principles and methods to understand the interrelated aspects and factors to holistically scale DER utilization. Are there any new insights or way of thinking about Distributed Energy Resources in this paper which are new to Australia?

Excellent article by Jeff St. John! Even though US transmission owners have been investing more than ever in grid infrastructure (over $25 billion annually), bottlenecks in the power grid are preventing the US from meeting surging demand and interconnecting the necessary new resources. Good news is that we do have tools to address these challenges: more proactive planning, grid enhancing technologies, and improved generator interconnection processes! The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Innovative Grid Development report shows that Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) and non-wires investments can expand the capability of the U.S. power grid by 100s of GW. These technologies also expand the capabilities of conventional new grid investments. A "must" if we want to achieve a timely and cost effective energy transition. Current power grids don't have the flexibility to support the energy transition and updating them will take years. National Grid and LineVision have found a faster solution unlocking unused potential in power lines. It is exciting to see great discussions and policy work to expand Transmission Grid Capacity and the role of Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) in unlocking the Grid for more renewables. We at GridAstra acknowledge some of the pressing challenges mentioned - the laborious work to simulate GETs during studies and lack of software tools to help plan the Grid with GETs. This article discussion flies in the face of the market PJM has created. A market that only supports short term assets like wind and solar backed up by gas or batteries. In short it confirms the market flaws that have been claimed by utilities over many years, and should encourage support for creating market signals to create long lived assets like baseload generation plants.

This is a timely discussion by Roger Pielke Jr. on how voters and consumers prioritize issues around energy. While climate change and energy transition have always been important issues, costs and reliability ranks higher. Politics are local and when it comes to energy, personal. During my years at EY we consistently found this sentiment to hold true regardless of demographics. To get the transition right, we need practical thinking about the pace and shape of the energy mix. A good place to start is investing in our foundational infrastructure so that new sources of energy and technology can be integrated.

Congratulations to Southwest Power Pool for continuing to reliably manage an increasingly intermittent generation mix, including the continued expansion of #demandresponse resources. "For the second straight year, wind generation produced the highest percentage of total generation, at 37 percent in 2023."
