HYDROGEN ECONOMY Q3 EARNINGS CALLS: A SLOW GRIND In a quarter of contradictions, hydrogen economy companies saw increasing production capacity, larger equipment contracts and expanding use cases even as they prepared for a much, much slower pace of adoption overall. A) COST CUTTING & REDUCING CAPEX WERE PREVALENT THEMES IN Q3 Ballard Power announced a global restructuring that would encompass a 30% reduction in operating expenses, deferring construction of a new factory in Texas and restructuring of its Weichai JV in China. Nel is holding off on its Michigan plant that has already secured subsidies for construction. Enapter is focusing on membrane production and is outsourcing electrolyzer assembly. Regarding plans to put its Texas green hydrogen plant on hold, Air Products CEO Seifi Ghasemi commented on his earning call that, “…in the future, we are not going to announce a project without having…a clear view of who will take 50%, 60% of the product on a long-term basis.” Plug Power has elevated 2025 gross margin breakeven to top priority through OpEx reductions, price increases and more proprietary hydrogen production.  B) EVEN STILL, THE CLEAN H2 COMMERICAL LANDSCAPE TOOK IMPORTANT STEPS FORWARD While the hydrogen economy is still far from self-sustaining, a steady stream of landmark transactions and critical milestones shows hydrogen companies are offering distinctive decarbonization strategies that have potential to evolve into successful businesses. PowerCell Sweden announced its largest maritime fuel cell contract ever to power cruise ships while at dock. Ceres Power announced its 3rd and 4th licensing deals with large, high quality global manufacturing enterprises. ExxonMobil’s Baytown 1mtpa blue ammonia plant attracted significant minority investment commitments from ADNOC and Mitsubishi. Siemens Energy and ITM Power received electrolyzer orders in Germany totaling 480MW. NFI and Ballard Power received an order to supply 100+ fuel cell buses to San Mateo, CA and Korea reached 1,000 hydrogen buses in operation.      C) FUEL CELLS ARE GAINING TRACTION AS A SOLUTION FOR THE GROWING GLOBAL ENERGY DEFICIT In conjunction with Q3 earnings, Bloom announced two deals that particularly highlight how fuel cells can be deployed to relieve strain on electric grids. In one case, Bloom is building an islanded microgrid to power Quanta Computer’s electronics equipment factory in Fremont. In another case, Bloom fuel cells will be strategically deployed by a CA utility to meet the power needs of a narrowly targeted cluster of companies. Although the feedstock for these fuel cells may not be clean hydrogen initially, the ability to shift to clean hydrogen appears to have been an important consideration in the customers’ purchase decision. In another variation of the theme, Stef will deploy Plug Power’s hydrogen forklifts at warehouses to save grid energy for refrigeration among other considerations.  #hydrogen #fuelcells #electrolyzers

Oil prices dropped 5% today on the news that Israel plans to limit its retaliatory strikes in Iran to military targets. If true, it does reduce the near-term threat to Iranian supply, but we don’t view it as a de-escalation of the conflict. It is official, the FTC is allowing the Chevron deal to proceed, absent Hess's CEO. It is the second time this year the FTC has, after extensive review, taken no issue with a particular combination beyond the presence of a single individual post-transaction. The two strongly worded dissenting statements by Commissioners Holyoak and Ferguson show stark division at the FTC over the outcome. As Ferguson put it: "The Complaint...alleges that adding John Hess...to Chevron’s twelve-member board of directors turns an unobjectionable merger into a Section 7 violation...Today, two merging companies pay a toll to pass through the Hart-Scott-Rodino gate. They do not pay the toll because Section 7 requires it. Nothing in Section 7 requires Mr. Hess to stay off the Chevron board. They pay the toll because the Commission has threatened to make their lives difficult if they do not, and they have concluded that it is easier to pay than to resist. The Commission collects the toll and proclaims victory. But reducing antitrust enforcement to a pay-for-peace racket inflicts serious injury on the rule of law—and on the Commission’s credibility." #FTC #Energy #antitrust

OPEC+ announced explicit plans to increase capacity in coming months... Members are clearly worried about their capacity in face of slowdown and EV movement. This most likely puts a ceiling on oil price for a while, preventing an energy inflation spike. And the U.S. will now be able to refill SPR in 70s (after selling at 110+).

I'm in London this week for meetings with European leaders on how US natural gas can strengthen cross-Atlantic ties on climate change and energy security.    Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, US LNG exports have helped to stabilize Europe's energy supply while delivering lower-carbon energy to complement the growth of renewables.    However, as the Washington Post recently pointed out, some of Europe's most ambitious climate policies are leading to unstable energy prices. This situation could make it more difficult to elect climate-minded leaders.   Pursuing perfection at the expense of the good can derail the progress made over the last decade and put the world even farther behind in its pursuit of maintaining 1.5 degrees Celsius. Following the House votes in support of BTU tax in 1997 and the cap-and-trade bill of 2010, my fellow Democrats understand all too well the long-term consequences of overreaching on climate policies during an election year. It was nearly a decade following those votes before we saw majority support for ambitious climate legislation. With half of the world’s population holding elections this year, politicians will be wise to learn the lessons of U.S. Democrats and take a steady approach that builds confidence in climate-focused leaders and ensures affordability of energy.   A new poll from PAGE that we will release in the coming weeks shows that Democratic voters in the US overwhelmingly support a steady transition to clean energy, using all options to keep prices down and reliability high. Similarly, European voters will look to their leaders for pragmatic solutions this summer that will reduce emissions while controlling prices.   By campaigning and legislating on reliable, affordable, and clean energy, leaders worldwide can better position themselves to lead a successful long-term energy transition that increases climate resiliency and quells extremism.

"The downturn in the lithium market undermines Western efforts to build a domestic supply chain for metals crucial for the energy transition and reduce reliance on China, home to most of the world’s refining capacity and some of the largest mining companies." The fundamental issue is that the West forgot to build a *demand chain* before they built a *supply chain*. Too many Beltway idiots were paid stupid money to promote the lie that the USA is desperately short of critical minerals. SHOW ME THE DEMAND US copper demand has been flat for TWENTY years. US rare earth demand has been GOING DOWN for ten years. US lithium demand is nascent and Trump 2.0 is nixing subsidies. The Australian Government was STUPID ENOUGH to listen to Washington and is on a #CriticalMinerals mission to nowhere. Meanwhile, China and Indonesia just inked a deal for more cooperation in minerals, not less. We are governed by complete and total morons.
