The Israeli developer of a belt-like device that monitors the health of both a pregnant woman and her fetus has merged with a US firm to create a new combined company. Nuvo Cares’s FDA-cleared device INVU is worn around the belly of the expectant mother and uses central and acoustic sensors to measure fetal ‎movements, fetal heart rate and maternal heart rate. The Tel Aviv-based company has merged with California-headquartered LAMF Global Ventures Corp. I, and the new entity will retain the Nuvo name and existing operational and management structure. The linkage of heart disease to developing cancer is both an extraordinary discovery and yet wholly unsurprising at the same time. Organisms are self-contained ecosystems, and what we know about ecosystems is that rarely does damage to one sector fail to impact others. This applies to organizations, friendship circles, economies, physical environments, and yes, human bodies as well. Maintaining and improving the health of any body - from human and animal to corporate, structural, natural, and even planetary - requires developing a greater understanding of the interplay and effects of the differing components that need to function in combination and in unison with each other. Self-monitoring the healthy and productive symbiosis of all elements within a body or organization is absolutely essential. We had a wonderful visit to the Gazit Lab, led by Prof. Ehud Gazit, Endowed Chair and the Academic Director of the BLAVATNIK CENTER for Drug Discovery - BCDD at Tel Aviv University. Prof. Gazit is one of the most active researchers at Ramot, responsible for numerous patents and spinoffs. His lab focuses on exploring biological and bio-inspired molecular self-assembly and adopts a minimalistic approach to defining small molecular recognition and assembly modules, studying their association in various biological systems. It identifies short peptides and metabolites forming amyloidal nano-fibrils and discovers a diverse family of dipeptide nanostructures with unique properties. Recent expansions include investigating peptide nucleic acids (PNA), merging peptide and DNA nanotechnology. It was a truly inspiring visit, and we can't wait to see the next groundbreaking technologies the lab team is working on. The Institute for Psychedelic Research (IPR-TLV) at the Sagol School of Neuroscience at Tel Aviv University began operating in recent months. Last week, for the first time in Israel, a healthy participant received synthetic psilocybin as part of an IRB approved research! The substance is given after medical screening, with the support of clinical psychologists and under the supervision of a medical doctor at a dedicated clinic for psychedelic research at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov Hospital). The researchers are currently focusing on the safety of the procedure and in the next step will continue to test the neurobehavioral mechanisms facilitating the effects of psychedelics with healthy individuals as well as additional neuropsychiatric populations such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). https://lnkd.in/dQGmKK8U A random observation by an Israeli cognitive neurologist about the demographics of Jews with early onset of Alzheimer’s disease has led to a genetic study with the potential to shake up how we diagnose and treat patients suffering from this condition.  In 2017, Dr. Amir Glik, the director of Cognitive Neurology at Beilinson Hospital, realized that of his Jewish patients experiencing cognitive decline, well over half were Sephardi Jews – those who originate from Spain and Portugal in Southern Europe and later North Africa and the Middle East. “I started asking myself, why does it happen?” Glik tells NoCamels. “Whether my feeling is something that I can prove with statistical methods or is it just a feeling. After doing the work, examining hundreds of patients, we saw that this is correct." “We want to know what are the mechanisms that cause Alzheimer’s disease,” Glik says. “If we know the genes that are risk factors for the disease, then we can learn about the mechanisms of the disease and maybe find a drug that can interfere in this mechanism, and postpone disease development.
