Green City Force

Economic Empowerment
Green City Force is an AmeriCorps program that engages young adults from low income communities in national service related to the environment. In doing so, we prepare them for sustainable careers, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building the green city we want to see.
Since our founding in 2009, we have engaged over 400 18-24 year old residents of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) in our signature Clean Energy Corps program.

In May 2013, Green City Force was recognized by Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg as New York City’s Most Innovative Nonprofit, under the first Innovation Awards administered by the NYC Center for Economic Opportunity. In September 2013, Executive Director Lisbeth Shepherd was recognized as a White House Youth Jobs+ Champion of Change.

A partnership between Solar One, the NYC ACRE incubator at NYU-Poly, and Greentech Media, Clean Energy Connections is a forum dedicated to sustaining New York City ’s cleantech community. With a local focus and an international reach, Clean Energy Connections brings together live discussions, networking, and online media to provide a platform for sector leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs to interact and inspire.

MTA AT&T App Quest

The MTA AT&T App Quest culminated September 17, 2013 at Grand Central Terminal at an event attended by New York tech leaders, developers and the media to hear AT&T New York President Marissa Shorenstein and MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast announce the winners of a 4-month public software challenge co-presented by the MTA and AT&T. The challenge kicked off May 4th with a hackathon in Downtown Brooklyn produced by the Polytechnic Institute of NYU that led to 49 transit apps submitted by developers…

The collaboration between AT&T and MTA aimed to accelerate development of apps leveraging AT&T's underground wireless service and the MTA's live data feeds. $50,000 in prize money supplied by AT&T was awarded to 9 teams. The challenge generated dozens of news stories on broadcast, print and blogs.
