  • Prescriptive Analytics: The Black Belt Of Digital Decisions

    Forrester Research

Prescriptive analytics is about using data and analytics to improve decisions and therefore the effectiveness of actions. Isn't that what all analytics should be about? We heartily say "yes" — if analytics does not lead to more informed decisions and more effective actions, then why do it at all? Our research indicates that prescriptive analytics is not a specific type of analytics but rather an umbrella term for many types of analytics that can improve decisions. • Artificial Intelligence: What's Possible For Enterprises In 2017

    Forrester Research

Artificial intelligence is not new. It emerged as a computer science discipline in the '50s and has been a persistent theme in science fiction. What is new now is that billions of dollars are flowing into AI startups and software development efforts by both the internet heavies and enterprise software vendors alike. It promises to be the technology Valhalla for AD&D pros who wish to use it to transform or invent new business models by infusing applications with intelligence. Read this report to…

  • Apache Spark Is Powerful And Promising

    Forrester Research

Apache Spark is an open source cluster computing platform designed to process big data as efficiently as possible. Sound familiar? That's what Hadoop is designed to do. However, these are distinctly different, but complementary, platforms. Hadoop is designed to process large volumes of data that lives in an Hadoop distributed file system (HDFS). Spark is also designed to process large volumes of data, but much more efficiently than MapReduce, in part, by caching data in-memory. But, to say that…

However, these are distinctly different, but complementary, platforms. Hadoop is designed to process large volumes of data that lives in an Hadoop distributed file system (HDFS). Spark is also designed to process large volumes of data, but much more efficiently than MapReduce, in part, by caching data in-memory. But, to say that Spark is just an in-memory data processing platform is a gross oversimplification and a common misconception. It also has a unique development framework that simplifies the development and efficiency of data processing jobs. You'll often hear Hadoop and Spark mentioned in the same breath. That's because, although they are independent platforms in their own right, they have an evolving, symbiotic relationship. Application development and delivery professionals (AD&D) must understand the key differences and synergies between this next-generation cluster-computing power couple to make informed decisions about their big data strategy and investments.

  • Forrester's Hadoop Predictions For 2015

    Forrester Research

Hadoop is the rising star of the business technology agenda for a simple reason — it disrupts the economics of data, analytics, and someday soon, all enterprise applications; it is secretly becoming an application platform too. Application development and delivery (AD&D) professionals should be aware of and take action on these eight predictions, including the disruptive power of "Hadooponomics," Hadoop's current killer app, the closing data management gap, and the emergence of brand new…

  • The Forrester Wave™: Big Data Streaming Analytics Platforms, Q3 2014

    Forrester Research

Streaming analytics is anything but a sleepy, rearview mirror analysis of data. No, it is about knowing and acting on what's happening in your business at this very moment — now. Forrester calls these perishable insights because they occur at a moment's notice and you must act on them fast within a narrow window of opportunity before they quickly lose their value. The high velocity, white-water flow of data from innumerable real-time data sources such as market data, Internet of Things, mobile,…

Forrester calls these perishable insights because they occur at a moment's notice and you must act on them fast within a narrow window of opportunity before they quickly lose their value. The high velocity, white-water flow of data from innumerable real-time data sources such as market data, Internet of Things, mobile, sensors, clickstream, and even transactions remain largely unnavigated by most firms. The opportunity to leverage streaming analytics has never been greater. In Forrester's 50-criteria evaluation of big data streaming analytics platforms, we evaluated seven platforms from IBM, Informatica, SAP, Software AG, SQLstream, Tibco Software, and Vitria.

  • Digital Creepiness: How Not To Spook Your Customers

    Forrester Research

Customers are flocking to apps that use more personal information because they find them intensely valuable. However, at the same time, many people think its creepy how much detailed information about their personal lives companies collect and use. Creepy marketing, creepy apps, and creepy experiences can lead to a creepy brand. That's bad. Companies that continuously ratchet up personalized, contextualized services will succeed. But, it can backfire if your customers feel that you have crossed…

  • Use Sensors To Take Apps To The Next Level Of Customer Engagement

    Forrester Research

Most apps are boring. Sensors can help. Sensors are data collectors that measure physical properties of the real-world such as location, pressure, humidity, touch, voice, and much more. You can find sensors just about anywhere these days, most obviously in mobile devices that have accelerometers, GPS, microphones, and more. You can also find them in planes, trains, automobiles, and coffee makers, too. But, most applications barely use them to the fullest extent possible. Data from sensors can…

The site selected may consist of one of a plurality of stored sites or a modification of one of those sites. Controller commands issued by a user are entered for altering the air traffic scenario. Rules and procedures stored in a general knowledge base and a site-specific knowledge base are compared to the present state of the simulation of the air traffic scenario or to the controller command by an expert system for issuing a warning upon the immediate or foreseeable failure to observe any rule or procedure in the knowledge bases.
