The carburetor was invented by Samuel Morey in 1826 but we're still #swissmachining brass jet nozzles today here at Acclaim Aerospace in #Georgia. Brass jet nozzles play a crucial role in metering the fuel precisely as the engine demands change, ensuring a consistent and optimal air-fuel ratio across different operating conditions. Physics... Jet nozzles in carburetors operate based on Bernoulli's principle, which states that an increase in the speed of a fluid occurs simultaneously with a decrease in pressure. As air flows through the narrow passage of the carburetor, its velocity increases, causing a pressure drop that draws fuel through the jet nozzle. The Venturi effect is a critical concept in carburetor design. It describes how fluid flow through a constricted section of pipe (the Venturi) results in a drop in pressure and an increase in velocity. This effect is harnessed to draw fuel into the airstream through the jet nozzle. Mercedes the modern Carburetor... Early carburetor designs were simple, using rudimentary means to mix air and fuel for internal combustion engines. As internal combustion engines became more prevalent, especially with the advent of the automobile, carburetors saw significant improvements. Karl Benz, the founder of Mercedes-Benz, is credited with developing the first practical carburetor in the late 1800s. By the early 20th century, carburetors became standard equipment in most gasoline-powered engines. Innovations such as the float-type carburetor, which regulates the fuel level using a float, became widespread. During the 20th Century, carburetors continued to evolve with designs becoming more complex to improve efficiency, fuel economy, and performance. #Brass jet nozzles were introduced as a critical component in carburetors to control the flow of fuel into the airstream. The precision of these nozzles was crucial for achieving the correct air-fuel mixture. Brass was chosen for its corrosion resistance, machinability, and ability to maintain tight tolerances. This made it ideal for the precise orifices required in jet nozzles. Over time, the design and manufacturing of brass jet nozzles became more refined. They were engineered to provide specific flow rates and spray patterns to optimize combustion efficiency. Manufacturers like Holley, Weber, and Carter were well-known for their carburetors. Starting in the 1980s, carburetors began to be replaced by fuel injection systems, which provided more precise control over fuel delivery and improved emissions and fuel efficiency. These BACB (Boeing Airframe Control Bearings) were the last commercial aviation parts we #swisslathe machined before canceling our AS9100 cert due to new Climate Change audit requirements (♻️👈🤡) Exiting commercial aviation really freed up a lot of not just #machining capacity -- but more overhead & financial capacity too Handling the low volumes, sporadic demand, tons of outside special processes with proprietary Boeing specs that even the D1-4426 source controlled vendors never want to do - not to mention the poor payment terms too that tie up cashflow for months... just isn't worth it these days. </rant> Too bad for Boeing as we were about 25% lower cost due to our lean flow & 24x7 operations which helped their Distribution Services division win the FAA repair and overhaul contracts that involved these and about 13 other similar A286 stainless bearing parts with +/- .0002" tolerances we also made in their work package over last 5 years. For us, the math is clear in firing aviation. Even when charging higher prices for aviation work, our profit margins and cashlow has measurable double-digit better performance when we allocate capacity instead to other customer markets like drones, pew-pews, electronics/semiconductors, valves, industrial etc. These customers are sooooo much easier to work with too. Plus, unlike Boeing and similar where we see our purchasing agents turn over 3 times in year (I am not joking), with our other customers we can actually build stronger relationships. Apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way either. When I've chatted with dozens of other owners of small #precisionmachining businesses, many of whom have been supplying #aviation parts for 10-20 years... lots of them are saying "no -quote" too. Prediction: the commercial aviation #supplychain is going to get worse, more limited, more constricted, and more volatile. Coming into 2020, before the disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, #aerospace already significantly trailed peer industries. From 2020 to 2023, these peer industries saw negligible change or at least slight improvement in the financial health of the supply chain --> automotive was up 1% and advanced #electronics was up 4%. Meanwhile, the financial health of aerospace supply chain *decreased* an incremental 9%. According to a McKinsey study of overall procurement, aerospace companies have underperformed relative to their peers in other industries by an average of nearly 15% over the past 18 years. 💡Idea: maybe #Boeing should INVEST in developing supplier relationships... not merely having backups but strategic and sincere. I am not holding my breath. For us, we're more than happy to instead provide our capacity and China-busting low prices for other customers who need #swissmachining to help them win more business, especially because they actually appreciate us.

It is disappointing to see this outcome. There are many bad incentives in play here that ultimately will not result in the safe carriage of the flying public. After the 737 Max debacle, I had hoped that the industry and our stakeholders would have approached this situation differently. Considering all the near misses at airports, quality challenges in commercial aircraft manufacturing, and the need for investment in aviation talent and infrastructure, it is disappointing that the lobbying of a fundamentally flawed aircraft architecture would get so much emphasis in our legislative process. The FAA needs additional resourcing of people and technology for existing FAA obligations including continuing airworthiness of the fleet and management of the airspace. I hope more stakeholders, investors and employees do their own homework about the economics and scalability of the designs at the core of the EVTOL industry. As always, this important topic is masterfully covered by Elan Head in The Air Current. Bravo for continuing to set the bar high for other journalists.

PSA for #hangar end users; you can go direct to Safespill. On a recent call with one of the largest #supplychain companies in the world, an FPE estimated the retroactive installation of ILDFA for one of their larger hangars would cost the client $14.4m, where the alternative foam system would run them $8.4m. Our initial quote to the FPE was $5.1m. Luckily we were on the call and able to flush out the "assumptions" made by the FPE that grossly inflated the cost. By the way, our turnkey quote DIRECT to the client that included all concrete prep, design, manufacturing, delivery, installation and a 10 yr warranty was $6.4m. This is not the first or the last time someone will assume we are more expensive than foam or even leave ILDFA out of the conversation all together? For example, if you attended a morning educational session at the NFPA conference in Orlando promising to "provide a roadmap to aid in the transition from legacy fluorinated foams (i.e., Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF)) to a suitable alternative." Yet heard very little to nothing about ILDFA when we are the ONLY approved foam alternative by both the #Military and #commercial #hangar building codes, ask yourself...why? Why would 3rd parties be reluctant to propose a system that is simple to design, costs you almost nothing to maintain, has zero clean up costs or impact to the #environment, will last you over 50 years and comes with a 10 year warranty that includes #maintenance and inspection. As a small manufacturing business owner, I occasionally get pinged by people asking about certain things in the manufacturing space, from compliance cost expectations to business processes. A manufacturer/provider of product in the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) is different than a service-provider company in the DIB. We've got heavy equipment that can be decades old and long-established business practices from a DIB that's been told to focus on quality, price, and lead time - not cybersecurity. I put something together that I could share out about these nuances, instead of me re-inventing the wheel each time I was asked. These aren't "excuses" for a manufacturer not to be secure and compliant. These are bits of context to provide insight into unique challenges manufacturers face. I heard the J-10 is also 40% off on Temu this weekend too 🤓✈️🏷️✅ Another factor that plays into this development is that the USA has repeatedly refused to supply the EAF with BVR capacity in the form of the AIM-120 missile despite Egypt being the 4th largest F-16 user. Overall the J-10C offers a clear cost advantage. The price per unit of the J-10C is estimated at around $40-50 million. Compare this to the F-16's cost of approximately $65-70 million for the latest variants (F-16V). And capabilities are similar, if not better in some areas...... Power and Engine: The J-10C, powered by the WS-10 engine, generates more thrust (14.5 tons with afterburner) than the F-16’s Pratt & Whitney F100 engine (13.2 tons). This gives the J-10C an edge in raw power, although the F-16 is lighter and more maneuverable​ Detection and Radar Systems: The J-10C comes equipped with advanced AESA radar, improving its ability to detect targets earlier and operate in electronic warfare scenarios. It also has superior electronic warfare capabilities, employing technologies like a distributed optoelectronic system. About to #swisslathe some pew-pew adjustment screws with "hexalobe" drivers (aka Torx)🔫🪛far better than Phillips or Robertson IMHO. I’m going to get straight to the point and say that it’s time for Robertson and Phillips screws to be retired and supplanted by Torx. *️⃣ Torx has been widely replacing Robertson and Phillips in the United States since then. They have been around for about 50 years, though only commonly available for the last 15 years. ⏹️ Robertson screw drives are also known as square drives. They are a simple and elegant design which looks good and is relatively easy to manufacture. They have been around for over 100 years. Robertson drives were invented in Canada and are a source of Canadian pride. While ubiquitous in Canada, they were rare in the USA for decades because the inventor P. L. Robertson refused to license the system to anybody else and thus drove away interested parties from the US and other countries ❎ Phillips drives will likely continue to exist for decades due to momentum and because they are cheap and because they don’t suck so bad that they are unusable. Eradicating Phillips drives in the US is about as hard as eradicating the Imperial measurement system, and for many of the same reasons. I can’t think of a single technical reason why Phillips should exist in this modern world. A big reason why we are all stuck with it is that Ford Motor Corp a hundred years ago went with it due to being denied licensing by Robertson! 💪 I think the primary argument as to why Torx is superior to Robertson is about torque and cam-out. Torx screws handle more torque, with less cam-out, than Robertson, especially at smaller sizes. And that difference is significant in practice. It’s the reason it was named “Torx” in the first place! Compared to Robertson, Torx has a better angle of torque application. The torque is closer to being perpendicular to the interface, and there are six interfaces vs the four of Robertson. Robertson doesn’t cam out like Phillips – the king of cam-out – but it rears its cam-out head when subjected to higher resistance and increasingly worn drivers. 💰Torx would have been significantly more difficult to manufacture 100 years ago when Robertson was invented. But today the difference is insignificant. Plus there is no longer patent encumbrance for Torx (expired 1988) and in fact it’s an openly available ISO standard. The Torx design has an ISO standard now which anybody can implement too. Overall I’m arguing here that Torx is better than Robertson and not that Robertson sucks. Robertson is far better than all the slotted and Phillips variations out there, as well as some of the other types. But there’s a good reason why Torx has been replacing Robertson (and Phillips variants) in all the hardware stores: people who use them recognize the superiority. #manufacturing #engineering #design #fasteners #machining #machineshop #aerospace

BETA has taken a pragmatic approach to AAM. Interesting that the article says the industry wrote off BETA as being a player in the UAM sub market. Notably, BETA developed their own vertiports that signaled they would both support other OEM operations, but could vertically integrate both products to provide a more complete solution for operators. Now they are making good on that long term bet by finalizing their eVTOL. Still a long way to go, but they’ve made excellent progress! #aam #beta #singleseatconsulting
