GOOD NEWS from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) DOE issues road map for speeding, improving grid interconnections to unlock 2.6-TW backlog  “There is unlikely to be any document for years to come reflecting such a comprehensive set of [interconnection] solutions,” said Tyler Norris, former head of development at Cypress Creek Renewables. The U.S. Department of Energy on Wednesday issued a road map aimed at improving processes that will allow generators to connect to the grid more quickly and efficiently. Integrating with renewables is not crucial, it is not necessary or even desirable. Nuclear can do it all, not just baseline. Ifthey can match peak, off-peak nuclear can provide desalination, high temp hydrogen, disatrict heating of course. Short term storage with molten salt. All provided locally to where the demand is. Renewables are wrong time and wrong place. No need to upset NIMBYs.

Navigating Grid Stability: Why Generators Dial Back in Crisis This is a topic that relates to the equal area criterion post in that it often is a stability issue. In that post (https://lnkd.in/evjkTjff), it was outlined that when there is a disturbance that causes an imbalance between the mechanical power put into a generator and the electrical power put into the grid, the angle will swing out. This can be caused by a line opening, a fault, or load dropping. This usually is not an issue because it is not enough of a swing to cause the synchronous generator to slip poles, and just causes the angle to swing out and then rock back to its new resting point. This is sometimes a consideration taken into account during steady-state conditions. Real power delivered into the grid is going to equal P_delivered = |V_sending| * |Voltage_receiving| * sin(angle difference) / Z_thevenin_impedance_to_the_grid). When a plant has a major line near it is taken out of service, the Thevenin impedance increases as the connection to the grid is poorer. In the equation for P_delivered, this would be equal to increasing the impedance in the denominator. The problem there with this is that since the first 90 degrees of the sine(angle) function is increasing, when the impedance in the denominator is increased the angle will increase and rest at a higher operator point, assuming the same power output. What is the problem with this? When the power plant operates at a higher angle, during disturbances it is going to swing out further. As stated in the earlier post, a power plant will be stable on the first swing provided that the energy put into the generator to accelerate it due to the mechanical energy put into it being different than the electrical energy delivered to the grid is offset completely by the braking energy of more electrical energy delivered than mechanical energy. The problem with operating at a high angle during steady-state conditions is that due to the shape of the sine wave power curve, there is less energy available to brake the generator. The area above P_delivered and below the half sine wave P_delivered curve becomes less as you move angularly out. If the swing goes too far out due to not enough available braking, the plant will become unstable. How is this sometimes mitigated? Power plants will sometimes turn down their generation when they are operating at too high of a power angle to avoid problems. Sometimes, facilities will have a mitigation like an extra load or a steam release valve that they can operate quickly to increase the electrical power delivered or reduce the mechanical energy put into the generator. In "Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Innovative Grid Deployment" the DOE says: "These findings represent an urgent call to action for regulators, utilities and all grid stakeholders to evaluate the opportunity to deploy these types of solutions to improve the reliability and affordability of the grid today." "Liftoff will be achieved when utilities and regulators comprehensively value and integrate advanced solutions as part of core grid investment, planning and operations. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is moving as quickly as possible to solidify guidance around Dynamic Line Ratings. Instead of ambient adjusted ratings, which are based on weather modeling, DLRs use sensors to measure real-time temperature, wind speed, and line tension directly on transmission lines. "Dynamic line ratings are one of the most cost-effective tools we have for getting more out of our existing power grid infrastructure," said Caitlin Marquis, managing director at Advanced Energy United. DOE evaluated all 54 operating and 11 recently retired nuclear power plant sites across 31 states. The sites were reviewed for factors such as availability of adequate cooling water, proximity to large population centers or hazardous facilities, or unacceptable seismic or flood hazards. Early research shows that 41 operating and retired nuclear power plant sites have room to host new reactors. The op-ed underscores the need to modernize and build out the grid and how Propel NY Energy will put the grid backbone in place to reliably serve Long Island’s growing needs.
