🚨 NEWS JUST IN 🚨 Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors (GM), has decided to suspend the construction of its EV battery plant in Michigan due to a temporary slowdown in global demand for electric vehicles (EVs). According to industry sources, the construction of EV Battery Plant 3, originally set to start operations in 2025, has been paused. Analysts now forecast the completion of the third plant will be delayed until 2025 or later. Of the five planned production lines, only two have received some equipment, while the schedule for the remaining lines has been put on hold. The EV market is experiencing a temporary adjustment, but these pauses highlight the dynamic nature of the industry. We couldn't agree more with Rivian's Alan Hoffman "the LCFS features prominently in the state’s climate Scoping Plan. It’s no wonder, given the policy’s many benefits for transportation electrification. The state’s EV goals mean that it has never been more important to ensure that the LCFS is strong and stable." If policymakers and environmental advocates are serious about lowering #GHG emissions as quickly as possible, in order to both speed reductions in air pollution to disproportionately-impacted communities AND minimize costs for transitioning to cleaner fuels, they need to take a technology-neutral "all of the above" approach that leverages the innovation of markets and economic incentives. California Air Resources Board's Low Carbon Fuel Standard has already exceeded every transportation fuel carbon intensity-reduction target set, and as Rivian and other EV industry companies and LCFC members like EVgo, CleanFuture, Inc., and Bridge to Renewables (BTR) have repeatedly noted: "Under the LCFS, clean fuels earn credits that producers of dirty fuels buy to achieve compliance with the standard. The resulting market multiplies the business opportunity for companies up and down the clean transportation value chain. In Rivian’s case [...] fast chargers generate credits when they charge EVs on the road, while fleet owners earn credits when they charge our vans and trucks in their depots. The recent adoption of a North American standard for a universal EV charging interface is big news for both EV EV drivers and EV manufacturers. Although there are a few "speed bumps" that will delay full deployment for a year or so, it will effectively double the number of EV charging stations available to the public by allowing non-Tesla vehicles to access Tesla's17,000+facilities, as well as enable Tesla vehicles to charge at any SAE J3400-compliant commercial charging station. This conductive path for ions and electrons results in high power capability and a fast charge rate.  Amprius plans to start shipping the cells in 2024, expecting to recognize the entire revenue from the contracts by mid-2025. Amprius Technologies has strategically partnered with contract manufacturers in Asia to scale up production and meet growing demand without the need for additional capital expenditures. This network allows for immediate flexibility in production capacity, crucial for advancing commercial engagements in the electric mobility industry. In the first half of 2024, Amprius shipped batteries to over 130 customers, including 100 new clients, reflecting its expanding reach. The company is also scaling up operations at its Fremont, California facility to 2 MWh and finalizing plans for a gigawatt-hour-scale factory in Brighton, Colorado. UtilityDive reporting on Hyundai and Kia developing LFP cathode technology. Interesting is that 1) this is LFP and 2) this is further upstream (into cathodes, not just cells) than US auto manufacturers are moving...maybe the US auto manufacturers (at least the Big 3) will take some lessons here...
