‘Flood of Shein and Temu Packages Sparks Delivery Startup Gold Rush’ Interesting piece from The Information. [paywall] Delivery providers are benefiting from this volume. Some have built their business around it. Some of the providers mentioned: -OnTrac -Hailify -UniUni -SpeedX -PiggyExpress -GOFO Express As well as national carriers. [UPS, FedEx, USPS] The USPS and OnTrac were cited as having a large chunk of the volume. Makes sense. But UPS and FedEx may be growing volume as well. The topic surfaced on FedEx’s June earnings call. Per Brie Carere: “Yes, we have a great relationship with all of the major e-commerce players out of China. No one carrier can serve their entire needs, and I think we found a very productive and profitable relationship. And again, I do want to emphasize very diversified base.” OK, FedEx doesn’t have a large chunk of inbound China revenue. [or at least not enough to report on] Interested to see if UPS gets the same question next week. [Q3 earnings are reported on July 23] UPS reported increased SurePost volume in Q1. Wonder if that’s boosted by China volume? If so, and it grows disproportionately, RPP goes down. [but UPS is handling that through other pricing actions] ----- China to US volume continues to impact the market. For some providers it’s a lifeline. For others, it’s volume/revenue growth unavailable elsewhere. Additionally, quick commerce platforms come with strict pricing rules and performance requirements. Fail to meet their standards—whether it’s a drop in sales volume or stock rotation—and you might face delisting. But it doesn’t stop there. The operational pressure is immense. Brands must constantly monitor stock levels and manage replenishment cycles just to keep up with demand. This isn’t sustainable for everyone. The heavy reliance on these platforms can make you vulnerable to unforeseen issues like supply chain disruptions or logistics delays. Thoughts on Zomato's recent acquisition of Paytm's Movie and Event Biz. 1. Right now Zomato is getting multiple of ~200 on it's EBIDTA, they paid multiple of ~80 (profit of 27 crore). For next couple of years they may continue to trade at ~100 multiple so from that POV it should boost their M cap or help maintain very stretched valuations if not boost them further. 2. It's already a ~9% EBDITA margin business for Paytm (300 cr revenue). Book my show made a PAT of ~85 crore on revenue of ~1000 crore last year (~8.5% PAT). This margin is better than grocery ever will be so margin accretive. 3. Zomato also wants going out biz to be worth 10,000 crore turnover (this is already at ~3500 crore GOV business, yet to make profit in zomato's case). This acquisition is good addition to this biz and fits in well with their ambition of making this the 3rd large business from house of Zomato. 4. Going out / Movie Ticketing is a duopoly market with Bookymyshow as only other large player. Zomato with it's execution rigour may be gunning for No.1 spot. If they make it happen, they will be No.1 player in 3 business. A very difficult feat. Paytm has 30-40% market share in ticketing and movie space. 5. Zomato also sitting on 12000 crores of cash. This is not generating more than FD returns I presume. So this is a good avenue for cash deployment as such opportunities are hard to come by. 6. They may look at entering food biz for movies. This is Large and immensely profitable segment. PVR made 2000 crore of revenue from selling F&B. Although I doubt PVR will be okay with that given 30-40% of their revenue and likely a higher share of profit comes from food. But I feel that some sort of integration is likely on cards. Supply chain network enabler for fresh products, Wheelocity, has raised $15 Mn (INR 126.5 Cr) in a Series A2 round funding, led by existing investor Lightspeed. The round also saw participation from Alteria Capital, Anicut Capital, and the company’s founder, Selvam VMS👇 The company plans to go beyond essential categories, such as fresh produce and groceries, and expand into non-food FMCG items, staples, household essentials, and other discretionary products. With this funding, the startup plans to expand to 20,000 towns and villages over the next 12 months, targeting a reach of 10 Mn consumers. Hurdle #1 in my startup journey Customers placed their orders on 12th November, but Delhivery, Delhivery Limited's exceptional delivery and pickup team is making the process a nightmare. They seem to have mastered marking orders as "not ready" or "shipper unavailable" on their own whims. The pickup guy? He never calls, never shows up at the facility at the scheduled time, and never picks up the orders on the promised day. Meanwhile, our customers are sitting at home, waiting for their orders to arrive, clueless that those orders have been stuck at our facility for over 8 days. Why? Because the pickup executive can’t be bothered to do his job. Oh, and let’s not forget the cherry on top: no direct contact number to raise issues as a seller. The number provided for the pickup executive? Useless. He doesn’t answer calls. If you want to ruin your customer experience and add layers of frustration to your life, I highly recommend Delhivery's unreliable and unprofessional services. Please share this as much as possible so that it reaches the Delhivery team and they can provide me with some solution.
