"Money and sex are the two addictions where everyone seems to envy the addict." My friend Jeff is worth $100 million, thanks to a successful IPO of his software company a few years ago. Before the sale, Jeff anticipated a blissful post-exit "happily thereafter." However, that dream never materialized. Buying a jet and luxury properties, joining prestigious boards, angel investing, and giving to charities - none of these activities brought him happiness. 4 years post-exit, Jeff still felt "angry and frustrated." So, how did he break this cycle? Firstly, he realized he had a “money addiction”. "I have always been chasing money. But it's not money that matters. It's energy. And what's better?" This epiphany lead to a decision to cultivate an "energy addiction" instead. "I am working on doing things that bring me energy, and I'm working really hard to avoid things that take my energy from me." But how exactly does he do that? Here's what he shared in our recent heart-to-heart: 🗣 Connecting with Founders: "I find energy in having interesting conversations with smart people," especially with fellow founders. "I think we have a certain wiring or communicate on a particular frequency that's difficult to reach with other people that are not founders. I just find all my best friends to be founders." 🤝 Serving Other Founders Purely Out of Love: "The key is I do it for nothing. I do it for love. I won't take a dollar. I won't take an option. I won't take equity. I want nothing." 🍽 Savoring Simple Pleasures: "I'm not that complicated of a person. My wife and I eat lunch and dinner together almost every day. We play backgammon. Sometimes it's reading a book, sitting quietly, listening to music."  🚴 Seeking Joy: It's about reviving that inherent playfulness. "I like to do things for fun, to be silly, goofing around with my friends." 🔋 Cutting Out the Drains: "I actively try to avoid things that are taking my energy. And if I find myself in a situation where my energy is being sucked from me, I leave." Jeff’s main rule: "An alcoholic can't have booze in the house. I can't have money involved." Is he succeeding? "It's hard to stop chasing money. I would say I'm at the stage now where I can identify when the problem is happening." Each night, he reflects, "Is today a day I would want to relive at some point in the future in my life? Would I rewind this day, or is this a day I would just as soon skip?" Amateurs are out there tossing LOIs like confetti, driving up prices without even glancing at the books. They inflate deals, waste time, and end up empty-handed. You? Do the homework, know the numbers, and leave the clowns in the dust. Real buyers know how to spot value before they throw their name on the line.

Here's how it typically goes when someone who thinks they're helping but they're just creating a shit show scenario for two other people without their consent. Aaron: "Tim meet Jeff and Jeff meet Tim. I thought that you two have a lot in common and would hit it off so I wanted to make intros. You two can take it from here." So, now Tim and Jeff are thinking WTF do I do with this? If I don't reply then I'm the asshole. If I do reply I may be opening myself up to something that may be a huge waste of time, even frustrating. Although, what if... Here's how it typically ends up happening. Tim: Hey Jeff, what do you want? Jeff: Hey Tim, what do you want? Tim & Jeff: Aaron, don't ever do that shit again! The point to this? Don't be a f'ng Aaron! If you're going to make intros because you think it may get you in better with certain people, ASK for their permission first!!!

THE PATH TO FINANCIAL FREEDOM VIA BUSINESS ACQUISITION As much as I like people buying lots of businesses and doing Holdcos and whatnot, I think the best strategy for MOST people that want to have maximum lifestyle freedom via acquisition entrepreneurship is: 1) Buy ONE established business with a multi-year track record of making 2-6X what your family NEEDS to live on in "profit" (SDE), utilizing an SBA loan with your own cash as the down payment and no investors. 2) Fully focus on it upon closing. Quit your W-2 if you had one while searching. Be hands on. Learn how to do every job there well so you can effectively lead others there from first-hand knowledge. Get it stabilized and strong post-closing with you as the leader. 3) Don't let your lifestyle spending creep up. Stay frugal as a family. 4) Aggressively pay off the SBA loan AND aggressively invest the excess profit (consider 50/50 ratio of debt acceleration and investment of profits) above your lifestyle needs back into the business and into more passive, cash-flow generating investments (real estate LP, SMB LP, etc.) with a goal of getting passive income > annual lifestyle spending as soon as possible. 5) Hire and train leaders at your company to the point of where you can take a 4 week vacation and the wheels don't fall off. No mission critical functions of your business are solely dependent on you. If you do this, within 5-10 years you'll have: 1) a business worth millions with zero debt, that makes you several times more than what you need to live, that can function on a day-to-day basis without you. At this point you can keep it long-term and run it part-time, or cash out and convert it to even more passive income for max freedom. 2) passive income streams that also make you more than what you need to live, so even if your business goes haywire from circumstances beyond your control, you're still financially free cashflow wise and you don't have any business debt to hang you. 3) no investors or banks or anyone to answer to /endtransmission PS- I'm OK with lifestyle creep in due time, because what's the point of all this money if you're not able to enjoy it!? I'm advocating just a few years of delayed gratification on substantial lifestyle creep, and then letting it come up if you want, as passive income passes your normal lifestyle spending. Let investment income lead it.
