Micron’s team delivered a record revenue quarter for our fiscal Q1, which represented an 84% increase from our year-ago revenue results. Our data center revenue reached a record high, making up more than half of our revenue for the first time, with revenue growing 400% year-over-year. Our shipments of HBM — a critical product for #AI data center servers — were ahead of plan and we doubled HBM revenue from the previous quarter. Customer inventory reductions in consumer-oriented segments and seasonality are slowing near-term bit shipment estimates. That said, we expect this adjustment period to be relatively brief and anticipate customer inventories reaching healthier levels by spring, enabling stronger bit shipments in the second half of fiscal and calendar 2025. Longer term, we see particularly robust growth ahead for HBM, with the total addressable market growing from $16 billion in 2024 to greater than $100 billion in 2030 (bigger than the entire combined DRAM/HBM market today). We continue to apply our technology leadership to create leading-edge products — from high-capacity server modules to SSDs, low-power DRAM and mobile memory — that address the high-growth segments of multiple markets, putting Micron in the strongest competitive position in our 46-year history.

Every single person on your team — no matter what their position is — should know and live by your company’s values. When I first joined Coherent Corp. (known as II-VI at the time) as a board member, we had 7 values. They were printed on the back of everyone’s business card but, still, I could never remember them all. In the wake of a large acquisition, I was walking around various facilities and chatting with everyone. I asked if anyone knew what our company’s values were — and no one knew them! That was a hint of an opportunity. I realized that the acquisition was a period of transformation for the company, and it was an opportunity to revisit our values. I remember studying the values of all the S&P 500 companies for inspiration, taking into consideration the founding values of II-VI as well as the values of the companies we had acquired. Eventually, I decided on: ICARE which stands for integrity, collaboration, accountability, respect and enthusiasm. Taken in that order, they have allowed our team to declare “I care” as the primary reason for working at Coherent and helping change the world. I firmly believe that values (and sticking to them) are integral to a company’s success. This might be a little bold to say but as far as I know, today, there’s no one in the company that doesn’t know what our values are.

Microchip Technology Inc. will close its Tempe, Arizona plant by the September 2025 quarter, affecting approximately 500 employees, as part of a strategic response to high inventory levels and slowing order demand. The company has revised its revenue outlook for the December quarter, projecting figures near the low end of its estimate at around $1.03 billion, facing an anticipated 40% drop in annual revenue. It would be far better for the federal entities involved in these semiconductor sustainment / advancement initiatives to broker a "spin-out" aimed at mainstream and trailing edge technologies for HiRel markets, intact. Everything else wastes working manufacturing capability and the mature nodes are the most exposed to this kind of "profit driven obsolescence". Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment - anybody home? MCEIP - anybody home? DPA Title III - Anybody home? SRHEC - Anybody home? What could "we" do with a wide open fab full of working equipment and staff? Stomp all over microcircuit obsolescence, is what. Make it a public benefit corporation, screw the profit motive that tanks it all in the end, and get on with building back missing-piece parts for hard core applications that sell for fair prices.

Congratulations to Flex Logix on this outcome. They helped bring much needed awareness to the capabilities and benefits of #eFPGA technology (I will have the yellow tradeshow booths permanently etched in my brain) . On a related note, this moment reminds me of the risk/reward tradeoffs associated with adopting start-up technology. Many years ago, we licensed sensor fusion software from a startup company. Shortly after going to market with that software embedded into one of our FPGAs, the startup company was purchased by a public company - and made a captive technology. That created a whole series of challenges for us - first and foremost was to make or buy an alternative so we could continue shipping. We decided to make, but in retrospect, buying (licensing) would have been much lower risk and lower overall cost. The end of an era. We wait to see how the story moves forward for a great technology company. The PC and Data Center market needs the scale that Intel brings. Intel Announces Retirement of CEO Pat Gelsinger. David Zinsner and Michelle Johnston Holthaus named interim Co-CEOs. Holthaus also appointed to the newly created position of CEO of Intel Products. Frank Yeary named interim executive chair. SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 2, 2024 – Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) today announced that CEO Pat Gelsinger retired from the company after a distinguished 40-plus-year career and has stepped down from the board of directors, effective Dec. 1, 2024.  Intel has named two senior leaders, David Zinsner and Michelle (MJ) Johnston Holthaus, as interim co-chief executive officers while the board of directors conducts a search for a new CEO. Zinsner is executive vice president and chief financial officer, and Holthaus has been appointed to the newly created position of CEO of Intel Products, a group that encompasses the company’s Client Computing Group (CCG), Data Center and AI Group (DCAI) and Network and Edge Group (NEX). Frank Yeary, independent chair of the board of Intel, will become interim executive chair during the period of transition. Intel Foundry leadership structure remains unchanged. The board has formed a search committee and will work diligently and expeditiously to find a permanent successor to Gelsinger. Yeary said, “On behalf of the board, I want to thank Pat for his many years of service and dedication to Intel across a long career in technology leadership. Pat spent his formative years at Intel, then returned at a critical time for the company in 2021. As a leader, Pat helped launch and revitalize process manufacturing by investing in state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing, while working tirelessly to drive innovation throughout the company.” Yeary continued, “While we have made significant progress in regaining manufacturing competitiveness and building the capabilities to be a world-class foundry, we know that we have much more work to do at the company and are committed to restoring investor confidence. Wrapping up #DAC61, I am curious about the decision to rebrand the event as "DAC, The Chips to Systems Conference," instead of the traditional "Design Automation Conference." This is not just a simple change of words — consider the keynote speakers. Last year, they were all #EDA luminaries:  Mike Ellow (recently appointed CEO of Siemens EDA), Lip-Bu Tan (former Cadence CEO), Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli (founder of both Cadence and Synopsys) and Walden C. ( Wally ) Rhines - long time CEO of Mentor Graphics. In contrast, this year, the keynote speakers were Jim Keller (Tenstorrent), Gary Patton (Intel) and Alan Lee (ADI) - all "Chip to Systems" executives. Is this a coincidence? Does it reflect EDA companies taking a lesser role at DAC? Siemens EDA (Siemens Digital Industries Software) was a notable exception as a Diamond sponsor, investing in a sizable booth and team, and hosting guests for a Giants' game at Oracle Park. (The famous Denali party is long gone...) Or is it because part of Design Automation is increasingly being done within "Chips to Systems" companies? Just look at Jim Keller discussing the importance of #opensource and Alan Lee explaining that "Product Design is Complex." What do you think? #Designautomation #chipdesign

The biggest message coming out of this year’s Qualcomm Investor Day is that both the present and the future look bright. How bright? CHECK THIS OUT! Its not just conductivity at room temperature, more importantly how stable is the conductivity (On Resistance) as the temperature rises. The ramifications on SWaP with the #IdealSwitch are huge. Just as we feared, our January 3 percent growth assumption for Q1-2024 has proved optimistic. The first quarter crashed, wiping US$13 billion off the quarter, which, in turn, has reduced our full year forecast by US$50 billion. Low unit sales, driven by ‘take of pay’ long-term price agreements (LTAs) from the Covid-boom era, are exacerbating industry attempts to rein back excess inventory. Just like the emperor’s new clothes, the supposed 2024 Super-Cycle has evaporated in a puff of smoke. It always was a delusion, Q1 removed all doubt.
