How can you become an effective mentor?
My favorite mentoring story was my second day at Fi360 where we hosted a conference & had a speaker who spoke about the value of a “reverse mentor”. I asked our you marketing director (Renee Watkins) if she would mentor me on social media - and I agreed to mentor her in general. It was the best “trade” I ever made! Renee taught me all about social media and answered all my many questions - I served Renee in a more formal mentoring role. And while she ultimately left the firm - it was the best thing for her

What are the best ways to build professional relationships in a virtual environment?
It’s hard to stand out & make personal connections in a virtual only world - be yourself and make sure you use a backdrop that is not distracting or too cluttered - a few photos on the desk can create a conversation and lead to a deeper understanding of the person on the other side of the screen. A follow-up for lunch or coffee also makes a big difference

How do you add human advice to robo-advisors?
“Robo advice” may work well for those who are just starting to save & invest (esp if they are in low cost index funds) but as people begin to acquire wealth and their needs change (home ownership, college savings, thinking about saving for retirement & then how to spend in retirement) they look to real people to help them. One of the best things a human advisor can do for their clients is help w behavioral finance. I remember the prior crashes & how some of the robots couldn’t execute trades & they certainly can’t convince investors to stay fully invested & remember to stay true to their long term financial plan.

What makes your thought leadership stand out?
Thought leadership has to be an ongoing effort. Of course you have to know your audience and provide a unique perspective, but it can’t be “one and done”. To become a trusted advisor you need to be consistent in writing and publishing. A few of the people who I admire in #financialservices are David Blanchett and Jamie Hopkins. They continually provide new ideas in different formats: video and papers. Well done gentlemen 👏👏👏

Through our unique matching program, we partner anyone, anywhere, and any cancer type seeking support with someone just like them – a “Mentor Angel.” A Mentor Angel is cancer survivor or caregiver who has faced the same type of cancer and provides a light in the darkroom of cancer. These one-on-one relationships give a cancer fighter, caregiver, or previvor the opportunity to ask personal questions and get support from someone who has been there. Mentor Angels can lend support and empathy; and help cancer fighters and caregivers navigate the system, determine their options and create their own support systems. Frequently, caregivers experience feelings similar to those of the person facing cancer. Mentor Angels can relate while being sensitive to the experience and situation. -
