#ERCOT's recent approval of NPRR1224 means #energystorage asset operators should expect an increase in ECRS deployments, along with a reduction in real time price volatility. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁: Last year’s introduction of ECRS led to an unintentional increase in energy prices for buyers. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯? 💵 The new product created a new revenue opportunity for energy producers. ⛔ As more assets were bidding into ECRS, their capacity was being held in reserves, and therefore were withheld or unavailable to be dispatched in the real-time energy market. 🙈 To ERCOT it appeared as though supply was not able to meet demand, despite the fact that the capacity was there – this is called artificial scarcity. 📈 Due to the appearance of scarcity, real time prices would increase.  In an effort to quell artificial scarcity, ERCOT is implementing NPRR1224, which enables them to manually release up to 500MW of ECRS capacity from the SCED at a 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 $𝟳𝟱𝟬/𝗠𝗪𝗵 when: 🚨 Energy demand exceeds the supply dispatched by SCED by 40MW or more ⏰ The imbalance lasts for 10 consecutive minutes

We see a grid with the importance of CAISO already operating with substantial BESS storage capacity. Storage capacity should be expected to be installed in different layers and operated through market signals. California appears to be leading the way in developing a successful market model. The capacity achieves the mark of 10GW. It is impressive what California has done in such a short time in adapting the market model to fit the specific technical aspects of Storage Sources. It is a really good example to inspire other TSOs / Markets in how to approach energy storage.

Higher volumetric density allows for compact systems, essential in space-constrained applications like fuel cell vehicles and industrial sites.  3️⃣ Operating Temperature  Defines the temperature range for effective hydrogen storage and release. Different methods (e.g., liquid hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures) have unique temperature requirements impacting energy efficiency and complexity.  4️⃣Cycle Life  Indicates how many times a system can be filled and emptied before performance degrades. A longer cycle life enhances durability, reducing maintenance and replacement costs in applications like transportation.  5️⃣ System Fill Time  The time required to fill a system with hydrogen, typically in minutes. Fast fill times, similar to gasoline refueling, are critical for user convenience and widespread adoption.  ▪️Interconnected Factors for Optimal Hydrogen Storage These factors often require trade-offs. For example, material-based storage like metal hydrides offers higher volumetric density but may have limits in gravimetric density or cycle life.
