During the announcement of a Massachusetts #AI Hub, Governor Maura Healey highlighted the work of the Burnes Center's AI for Impact co-op students working in partnership with Commonwealth of Massachusetts on AI projects for good. "Northeastern University students have worked with state teams to try out AI tools that are now, right now, improving the delivery of service — it’s a big deal,” Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said at a press conference Thursday. Healey told the audience that she was “floored” when Northeastern students presented projects they worked on with state agencies.  For example, students developed a generative AI chatbot designed to assist MBTA customer service representatives. “You know what’s even greater? Babson College is equipping its students with innovative AI-driven tools and resources to enhance their educational experience. The college has introduced the MathBot, developed in partnership with Microsoft and Terawe, to support student learning across various academic backgrounds. Additionally, Babson has committed $250,000 in AI-focused student grants to encourage exploration of innovative AI solutions. 'Our educators are constantly sourcing state-of-the-art tools and innovative solutions to accelerate learning and ensure student success,' said Patty Patria, CIO of Babson College. 'The rise of AI provided a perfect opportunity to bring individualized learning to students and better equip the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.' The MathBot pairs academic material with generative AI capabilities to streamline the learning process, cater to individual student needs through customized learning pace and style, and offer additional online resources for future learning. In addition to the MathBot, Babson has dedicated $250,000 in grants for students to implement AI in educational or entrepreneurial endeavors. Up to 250 students will receive $1,000 each, after application and approval. 'Our community's embrace of generative AI provides the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders with important access to crucial resources and emerging technologies,' said President Stephen Spinelli Jr. MBA'92, PhD. We are so excited to announce that our Innovation and Technology Cabinet is partnering with the Boston Public Schools to adapt data science curriculum to use Open Data. We know that data science and AI will lead to great career opportunities, but the gaps in representation for women, Latin, black, and other groups in these jobs will excacervate wealth gaps. We believe that if students have access to learn how to answer questions about their neighborhoods and their communities, that studying data science and AI will be much more relevant. We know human knowledge and experience is essential to good analytics: it’s how we know if we have an over fit model, if the answers make sense. And the wisdom that our BPS students can only be made even more powerful with the language and tools of Data Science. We know we are obsessed about answering interesting questions about our City that matter. Yakov Bart, marketing professor at Northeastern University, finds that job applicants are more positive about AI in hiring when they know the algorithm ignores gender, race, or age. In a study with Lily Morse and Mike Teodorescu, the “fairness-through-unawareness” approach was perceived as fairest, particularly among women and non-binary individuals.
