With #FERC set to act in the next couple weeks, we’re going to be seeing even more stories about grid managers scrambling to serve an explosion in #loadgrowth. It’s important to remember that load growth = economic growth because it reflects investments in manufacturing, data centers, and electrification. The states and regions that ensure access to reliable, affordable, and clean power are going to be at a competitive advantage when it comes to attracting major investments.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission last week approved two 345-kV transmission projects to improve the reliability and affordability of energy delivery across the Midwest region. Minnesota Legislature Passes Energy Infrastructure Permitting Act to Streamline Clean Energy Projects The Minnesota Legislature has enacted the Energy Infrastructure Permitting Act, a new law designed to expedite the state’s clean energy permitting processes. This legislation aims to eliminate redundancies and allocate funds to optimize rooftop solar permits, supporting Minnesota’s goal of achieving 100% carbon emissions-free energy by 2040. “The Minnesota Energy Infrastructure Permitting Act is an important step forward to modernize our permitting process so we can meet this critical moment and ensure projects can develop with the urgency needed to meet our goals,” said Minnesota Representative Jamie Long. Connecting new power plants to the transmission grid in the U.S. takes too long. With rising electricity demand, power plant retirements, and frequent severe weather, adding new generation rapidly is crucial – yet we’re moving too slow. For example, Enel’s 2017 interconnection request for a North Dakota wind farm is still pending after seven years, with costly transmission upgrades required hundreds of miles away. This can change. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) can set criteria to speed up interconnection studies and cut unnecessary costs. The recent passage of the Energy Infrastructure Permitting Act by the Minnesota State Legislature is an important step to reduce permitting barriers that slow deployment of clean energy generation. The EPA announcement on power plant regulations raises significant concerns about our nation's energy landscape. The rule outlined is unlawful, unrealistic, and unachievable. RWE and Peabody Energy are partnering to develop renewable energy projects on repurposed mining lands in the Midwest. The renewable projects planned for the reclaimed lands have the potential to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 850,000 homes across the region. The partnership will allow for projects to be developed in rural areas without impacting farmland, while still bringing important economic benefits to the area.

Did you know that some experts have identified "closing the workforce gap" as the 🔑 key to decarbonization? I was delighted to see this recent article in the Chicago Sun Times. It highlights the intersection between a skilled workforce, training programs (particularly for underrepresented individuals and groups), and the clean energy transition. Deloitte's renewable energy outlook last year stated that there are 3.3 million clean energy jobs in the United States today, the majority of which are related to energy efficiency or renewable generation. However, a skilled workforce gap means some of these open roles - plus the 3 million jobs per year that clean energy is expected to create - will remain vacant. Shoutout to 548 Enterprise (parent company of the 548 Foundation) for its mission-driven approach to workforce development and solar installation.
