With the increasing number of cyberattacks on healthcare, it's crucial for hospitals to prioritize cybersecurity to safeguard patient health information and safety. Last year, HHS examined the cybersecurity resiliency of US hospitals and has published recommended Cybersecurity Performance Goals (CPGs) for Healthcare and Public Health. One of the many topics we dive into during the Levan NSU Broward Center of Innovation and Maverc Technologies Cybersecurity Apprenticeship are examples of current and past cybersecurity events. Cybersecurity consist of a broad array of disciplines. My experience working with the various military academies, cyber warfighters that have been trained all around the U.S. and students from the National Security Agency Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity accredited colleges and universities has taught me that each aspiring cybersecurity practitioners has to find their passion within the profession to be the best they can be. Registrations are still being processed for this free program that prioritizes veterans but is open to others interested in cybersecurity as a career. Are #IT infrastructure and data assets strategic assets or cost centers? I recall flying the weekend of the United merger with Continental years ago, and the system got so messed up that they resorted to an honor system to get on the plane. I'm not kidding. Then there was the Southwest Christmas fiasco. Now Delta. The common thread is a pattern of kicking IT and data investments down the road because they don't yield immediate revenue. Compare that with #healthcare. There are plenty of shiny object ambient documentation or chatbot offerings out there that attract attention but my observation is that provider organizations tend not to invest in things like data governance. My opinion is that it is because (1) executive decision-makers don't understand the concept and (2) such efforts don't yield a measurable short-term revenue yield. I suspect that sort of thinking probably affected United, Southwest and Delta's executives as well.
