One of the side-effects of parametric modeling with implicits is that your designs update in real-time. Useful for not just interactivity but also simulation. Also, the new rendering in nTop is a major lifestyle upgrade.

Shout out to Evan Pilz & Gabrielle Thelen for this computational model that generates a mask conforming to an individual's face in nTop! It takes as an input a mesh (from a scan) of a face and a few design parameters for the flange and automatically generates the final mask with flange linking the non-custom parts to a face. The mask can also be repositioned & sized based on input points or a target coverage area, or this can be setup to work with a number of different generic mask designs. I'm still impressed with the robustness in using nTop's underlying implicit model + the automation capabilities of the nTop notebook to enable these precise surfaces to just work across a range of inputs -- I guess you could also tweak this file to take in a dogs face if you happen to be designing masks for dogs :) Here's a link to the file: https://lnkd.in/gdrQjMYq

This week at the Automate Show I had a really great conversation with Alvin Clark, a Sr. Developer Relations Manager at NVIDIA. My connection to NVIDIA is actually not new; they used to be my customer when I was the Silicon Valley Sales Manager at CST (now part of the Dassault Systemes - Simulia Software Portfolio) and also a partner for the development of high-performance engineering simulation using GPUs. I joined the NVIDIA Inception Program while developing supply chain AI at Algo - this program has now grown to a global network of over 18,000 technology startups! Fast forward a few years, after some twists and turns, now I get to partner with NVIDIA to learn and share ideas about innovation in robotics and AI for supercharging the manufacturing and automation industries, which I love! Based on Alvin's recommendations I managed to visit a few NVIDIA partner booths to see the practical applications being developed with their tech and it's a mix of industry heavy weights and newer startups: Universal Robots - dare I say the King of Cobots? “3D chip design is so complex that engineers need something powerful that allows them to interact with it,” said Rich Goldman, head of strategic partnerships at Ansys. “They need to have high-power hardware to do this. 🎄Merry Christmas from Mobile Multibody Dynamics. My second app, and the most closely linked with my mechanical engineering career. This model of a tree made with several rigid links and point mass “ornaments” was created inside the MOMDYN app on my iPhone. 🧞‍♂️I started this app about 5 years ago, originally in Python, before migrating over to native Swift and Kotlin. Development has stagnated a bit over the past year as I’ve moved on to other projects, but I’ll probably revisit it soon for a substantial overhaul. I get a lot of questions about what Coreform is all about and how we impact the CAE world. Here's the answer: Our mission is to accelerate engineering design through easier and more powerful FEA. We leverage cutting-edge techniques from FEA and computational geometry to streamline the process of setting up FEA models while providing simulations results that are more accurate and robust than traditional low-order FEA across linear, nonlinear, static and dynamic simulation regimes. In most cases, our customers report that simulation models that usually take several weeks to build can now be built in less than a day allowing for more simulation and better engineering design. People's first reaction is often skepticism as it seems too good to be true! 🚕~ One slide in the deck of my talk about AI-controlled Humanoid Robots at Robotics Summit & Expo was triggering a particular amount of positive feedback: The dismantling of the Autonomy Levels used for autonomous cars by functionality and safety. Often referred to L1-L5, these actually describe both dimensions, but don't distinguish them - which is why, in my observations, they are often misunderstood: L2 doesn't mean that it can do less than >L3, it just means that it can't do that on its own. This is because the levels are now officially awarded according to the safety aspect, not the functional aspect. Tesla has an AI driver that can drive for you, A to B, quite reliably. Mercedes-Benz AG has driving automation that drives for you in the traffic jam (or up to 60kph/37mph). Now the other aspect is the safety certification of these. Mercedes let’s you focus on other tasks when in automatic driving, it's certified to do that reliabily. Tesla’s FSD, you have to watch at all times, because it’s not certified to be able to drive alone, even that it can functionally do much more. AI-controlled robots have the same challenge like Tesla's AI driver, when it comes to behavioral safety: With end-to-end neural control, there is no way to certify safety based on the classical methods of functional safety with full traceability from requirement to verification of the implementation. It can only be certified with statistics, which is very hard. At Synapticon, where we're leading the market with functional safety for motion control, we are working on bringing robot safety to the next level: Enabling safe, autonomous, intelligent robots that humans can rely on won't harm them, on a motion AND behavioral level. A lot of people come to me and ask me how to generate structured hexahedral meshes in Salome. The main idea is to create hexahedral blocks in geometry part (either SHAPER or Geometry module) and use Hexahedron (i,j,k) algorithm in Salome Meshing. For simple geometries, you can do it easily. However, for complex geometries, unstructured meshes may be more efficient for your time.
