PARTYNEXTDOOR'S manager Tyler Henry recently shared gems on working PND, OVO, & more. Here are 5 of my favorite takeaways: 1) How you do anything is how you do everything Tyler shares the story of how he got his start in the music industry while in college in California. One of his first opportunities was a result of connecting with Drake's tour manager Jamilio who asked Tyler for help working a party. Tyler took the job incredibly seriously and came with a team of people that were super on point: •Tyler & his team showed up early •Each person had an assigned role  •Everyone wore black outfits as a uniform Tyler treated it like the Super Bowl - Jamilio saw his execution and precision which led to more opportunities. How you do anything is how you do everything. 2) Preparation is key Tyler talks about wanting to understand who the key players were that worked with the artists he was either currently working with or wanted to work with. He made a spreadsheet of artist and manager contacts to help understand who everyone was, capitalize on opportunities, and meet as many people as possible. That preparation and understanding of who the key players were allowed him to recognize folks in person and capitalize on what would otherwise be small moments. For ex: while waiting in line for the bathroom, he recognized an agent from the spreadsheet he made and initiated a conversation that made a last impression. Tyler also talks about being asked to help tour manage a show on the West Coast one year. Tyler knew that show was 1 of 5 and instead of just packing a bag for that one show, he packed a bag for all 5 just in case he got asked to stay on. Preparation met opportunity when he was asked to stay on for all 5 shows and after being able to because he was prepared, that was how he met PARTYNEXTDOOR. 3) Opportunities create momentum One of the biggest takeaways from Tyler's story is how moments and opportunities snowball - there is momentum in capitalizing on opportunities as doors continue opening from one thing to the next. Doing a great job in one moment can help open the next door. 4) Hard work is necessary Tyler tells the story of how when PARTYNEXTDOOR went on his first tour with Drake, he didn't get caught up in the nightlife or partying. Every night after the show, he would work on music with a small handheld mic and continue to perfect his craft. That dedication helped Party make some of the music that eventually catapalted his career. 5) Understanding your artist Part of being a great manager is understanding your artist and the fact that every artist has their own nuance. What works for 1 artist might not work for another one in terms of strategy, opportunities, workflow, and work style. It's important to understand your artist and tailor to their specific needs. It baffles me how many artists don’t want to take control of their own careers. First, if you're not using TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram, you're missing out. These platforms are free and give you direct access to fans. Second, you can't just rely on your talent. You need the complete package: a unique look, a strong brand, and engaging content. Labels need to see that you're marketable. Artists, you need to be your own promoter, know exactly who you are as an artist, and bring something unique to the table. It’s not enough to just have talent—you need the complete package. That’s the reality, plain and simple. If you’re aiming to get signed, labels need to see that you’re marketable, that YOU are marketable. You’ve got to have everything in order. Consistency is key. Show up regularly, engage with your audience, and build a community. The more you put out, the bigger your audience will grow. What are you waiting for? Make your own reality. Stop waiting for music biz execs to make decisions for you. Take control of your destiny and start engaging with your future fans today. You can use these platforms to build such a strong fan base that labels and executives can't say no. The power is in your hands. You just have to work hard for it and be undeniable. Dear Younger Me, As you take your first steps into the music industry, I know you’re eager to prove yourself, but let me remind you—it’s okay not to know everything yet. You don’t have to have all the answers right now. It’s a journey, and learning from others is a big part of it. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, soak in wisdom, and grow from the experiences shared by those around you. Most importantly, don’t isolate yourself. Go out often, meet people, and build genuine connections. You can’t do life alone, especially in this industry where relationships matter just as much as talent. Those connections will help shape your journey in ways you can’t even imagine right now. It’s okay trust your instincts, seek validation within yourself, rather than from others. Remember that self love is important. It’s okay to take your time, to learn as you go, and to lean on others. You’re going to do great—one step at a time. Here are 5 ways artists can still implement artist development in their careers: The lack of artist development in the music industry has been a hot topic over the last few years as virality and social media has catapulted artists and in some ways expedited what was once a long timeline to success. Every single day artists with no experience find success building an audience without being fully prepared for it. Here's a few ways artists can implement: 1) A&R: A&R is the process of creating, refining, and developing an artist’s sound and style. It’s essentially the process of creating the music. Examples of artist development in A&R can be: • Vocal coach - hiring a professional to help with breath control, tone, and more  • Collaboration / mentorship from other artists - seeking knowledge and game from other artists in a similiar genre  • Being intentional about working with specific producers to help craft an intentional sound 2) Branding & creative One tactical exercise is building a Style Guide or Brand Deck - a style guide is a document that helps communicate an artist’s visual identity. It’s essentially their brand bible and shows how they envision their visual brand. Style guides can have the artist logo, preferred fonts that the artist would like to use any time there’s text in their branding (show flyers, music videos, etc), examples of photos they feel like represent their brand, words that define the brand, and more. It’s essentially giving context to what the brand is about. Normally living as a PDF, it’s something the artists and their teams can reference themselves but also share externally with other creatives as they collaborate on projects. 3) Digital Marketing With how fast the internet moves, it’s easy to avoid the process of actually learning and understanding how platforms work. Artist development in digital marketing can simply be taking a moment of pause to understand how your brand will be communicated online: a) understand how the platforms work  b) define how you want to present yourself on those platforms c) find where your fans live on those platforms d) think about how to develop a strategy that works for you 4) Press Media training is still a thing! It's literally a skill and an art. When looking at the idea of media training holistically, couldn’t almost every artist benefit from learning how to communicate in a way they feel comfortable with? • What topics to talk about and avoid.  • How to switch subjects on something you’re not comfortable talking about.
