How can you create a positive group dynamic?
Positive group dynamics are built on positive individual interactions. When participants feel seen individually, they are more likely to engage in group activities, contribute to group discussions, and feel vested in the outcomes of the engagement. While the facilitator should be the guide and not the hero of group activities, it helps to share some of my relevant experiences along the way and elicit responses from the group as subject matter experts. Each person has a unique perspective, and often they surprise each other. Teaching others is a powerful catalyst for openness to team building. When woven throughout an engagement, this sets a precedent for the expectation that all have valuable contributions and fosters inclusivity.

How can you develop emotional intelligence skills in your team?
It can be difficult to be mindful when the world and your daily life whiz by and you feel you don't have time to think. Instead of attempting to clear your mind, sharpen it. Here is the not-so-secret secret: stop trying not to think. As one of my favorite sci-fi movies states, "resistance is futile". The more you try to clear your mind, the more clutter accumulates. Instead, think of something positive, maybe a goal you have, and keep refocusing on that. Think about how it will feel to accomplish it. Imagine the gratitude you'll feel when you have it. When other thoughts invade, reimagine life with the goal accomplished. Be stubborn in holding the vision. Bring back child-like optimism. Kids want what they want, unapologetically.

How can you develop emotional intelligence skills in your team?
Awareness is integral to EI development and is correlated highly with your ability to navigate and direct your emotions. Yes, you can direct (and redirect) your emotions. Reengineer the cycle of thoughts>emotions>actions. For example, you have a thought that someone at work is trying to undermine you. The emotion that follows is anger, and the action is a hastily sent email copying leadership to "put them on blast". Instead, before you allow yourself to become angry, quickly insert a different thought. You must be doing something right if someone is trying to bring you down. What might they be thinking, what perceptions do they have of you, and are they valid? This new thought leading to a different emotion can lead to a different action.
