During the second half of Microsoft's fiscal year 2024, I dedicated time to learning as much as possible about artificial intelligence and its transformative impact on product design, product management, storytelling, and leadership. This experience connected me with many other learners inside Microsoft, all sharing similar goals as we collectively work to transform the company, our careers, and our personal vision for the future. This is something I will continue to pursue because we have an incredible opportunity to leap forward in redefining many dimensions of our world. Many things have been said about AI, and while we may feel fatigued by the repetitive promises we've heard over the last year and a half, the key is our intensive work towards this direction. We inevitably face moments of self-criticism, which require even more learning. Each wave of learning lifts us, increasing our awareness and perception of where we're heading. Incredibly proud of the latest Kinesis Client Library version (3.0) which, when compared to previous KCL versions, reduces compute costs by up to 33%. KCL 3.0 introduces an enhanced load balancing algorithm that continuously monitors resource utilization of the stream processing workers and automatically redistributes the load from over-utilized workers to other underutilized workers. This ensures even CPU utilization across workers and removes the need to over-provision the stream processing compute workers which reduces cost. Additionally, KCL 3.0 is built with the AWS SDK for Java 2.x for improved performance and security features, fully removing the dependency on the AWS SDK for Java 1.x. #Kinesis #DataStreaming #KCL

Understandanding What, How and Why of open source contextualises Mark Zuckerberg's blog post eulogising the benefits of open source: 1. what open source means in the context of AI and the risk of open washing 🧐 There's great recent work looking at 14 aspects of AI that can be opened wholly or partially and the risk of open washing https://lnkd.in/eTSEFsPw and the OSI is working on a definition. So, *what is it that's licensed openly*? 2. The Llama Community License (which is and was a step in the right direction towards openness in AI) has restrictions around commercialisation of that could interrupt the free flow of the licensed AI. That free flow being frictionless is central to open source and the restrictions mean the LCL would not and could not meet the Open Source Definition or be classed as open source. The OSD simply doesn't tolerate restrictions on who can use or how - ie unlimited commercialisation. That's tough as you enable your competitors through your own innovation. The restrictions on the licence create friction in that free flow and potentially enable Meta to capture a level of the market of users - although as they can't track users that of itself could be hard to manage. So, *how is it openly licensed*? 3. Zuckerberg explains - honestly - that there are business benefits to open source and being at the centre of an ecosystem. Open source software is better for all sorts of reasons, but the primary reason businesses use open source and open source their outputs is financial - it's good for the bottom line. That's not necessarily a bad thing in a world where shareholder value is the principal requirement. A side effect of open source is that as well as being good for the botttom line it can democratise tech. But we should be under no illusion. So, *why does business open source*? The EU and anyone else creating regulation and carving out open source should understand the benefits and risks of Llama as open innovation not open source, as well as the meaning of open source and risk of open washing. That will enable them to handle this nuanced conversation appropriately- please 🙏
