Recent research suggests a potential link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and Alzheimer's disease: A study examining 500 breast cancer mammograms and various adenocarcinomas found significant HPV-16 infection along with increased β-amyloid (1-42) levels. All 20 Alzheimer's cases examined in this study showed significantly elevated HPV-16 levels (1500-3000ng), markedly reduced acetylcholine (0.5-1.5ng), and increased β-amyloid (1-42) levels (7.5ng or higher). A population-based cohort study in Taiwan found that patients with genital warts, which are caused by HPV infections, had a higher risk of developing dementia. The adjusted hazard ratio for dementia was 1.485 in genital warts patients compared to controls. While not specifically about HPV, other studies have found associations between various viral infections and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's. These findings suggest that HPV, particularly HPV-16, may play a role in Alzheimer's disease development.
