In late 2023 we reported that MySQL and MariaDB’s REPEATABLE READ did not, in fact, provide repeatable reads. The MariaDB team has been hard at work this past year. They’ve added a new flag, --innodb-snapshot-isolation=true, which causes REPEATABLE READ to prevent Lost Update, Non-repeatable Read, and violations of Monotonic Atomic View. For all y'all polyglot coders out there. Is there a language that you use, but for whatever reason never really mention you use it? Lately, one language I always seem to forget is Ruby. I've written infrastructure and sites with Ruby (on Rails) and for some reason that one seems to slip my mind. I feel like the reason this one slips my mind is because it often melds into Python for me, similarities and all, and much of the last Ruby I wrote was infrastructure code that all got replace by Golang. What about you? Write Go and forget you do sometimes? Maybe you whipped through some Erlang but now you write so much Java you forget to mention Erlang? Just curious.

This was a great keynote by Kelsey Hightower at the LF open source summit a few weeks back. Two things came to mind: If all maintainers were as open minded about the community and forks, we'd have far less energy wasted in drama and duplication. If regulators / policy makers understood the intersection better between a maintainer creating something useful -for them- and commercial entities leveraging said capabilities, we'd save a lot of effort battling bad policy. The entire plot of the Iliad is like one big code review gone bad. You just spent the better part of the week painstakingly building out that killer new feature. In fact, it's some of your best engineering, the unit tests are a work of art, and the function names would make Uncle Bob proud. But not so fast! The next thing you know your work is completely ripped apart by someone more senior. This is what sparked the rage of Achilles! Agamemnon used his opportunity to save the Greek army as a means to assert his dominance over Achilles, rather than leading as he should. Agamemnon took what was treasured by Achilles in front of everyone setting in motion the epic on anger and pride. At one time or another we've all been tempted like Agamemnon when giving a review. So remember, code reviews aren't a means to satisfy our own pride and insecurities about our position. Have you ever been in a code review that felt more like a battle than a collaboration? Been doing some actual hands-on coding in the last week plus, and I can't say enough about Claude Dev. It would probably annoy expert coders (too slow and asks for too many approvals) and bewilder non-coders (too fast, makes sweeping changes that you have to approve) but for someone like me who knows what code looks like, wants to understand what the bots are doing (and sometimes redirect them) and can frame good questions about error messages, it is incredible. I've been using Cursor in parallel (including Composer mode) to do bits and pieces of this task, and Claude Dev is really a cut above. Project # 8 Another week in the books on my Cloud Dev Ops journey with Level Up In Tech. In this project we dove into Two-Tier Architecture, installed Joomla, and Launched a RDS instance. I'm finding that staying consistent and taking the time to work through my issues is giving me a better understanding and the next time I run into the issue I have an idea of how to solve it or at least where to begin.
