Many expected oil prices to spike and hit the 3-digit territory following Iran’s first ever direct attack on Israel. Instead, prices have displayed some softening and not commensurate with the severity of the situation in the Middle East. Why? 1. No supply disruptions to date. 2. Significant safety cushion in the system, in the form of spare capacity as a result of OPEC+ cuts. 3. Uncertain demand outlook - yes recent positive signals but structural problems remain particularly in China - the growth engine for oil demand. 3. Non-OPEC+ supply still strong. 4. The Amazing US Oil Industry Keeps Setting New Records In case you missed it, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (#EIA) reported Thursday that domestic #oil and #gas producers achieved new record high oil production during the week ended August 4. Producers pumped out an amazing 13.4 million barrels per day (bpd) for the week, an increase of 800,000 bpd from the same week a year ago. For context, this weekly production record is more than 3 times the 3.794 million bpd the U.S. produced in September 2008, just 16 years ago, and more than double the volume produced in September 2012. The former 62-year nadir in U.S. production came the month before the first successful well was drilled into the #EagleFordShale, kicking off the shale revolution in oil production that has driven the rise of the domestic industry ever since. The Eagle Ford was in full boom, along with the #Bakken in North Dakota, by September 2012, and the mammoth #PermianBasin was in the early stages of its own #drilling boom at the same time. Since then, the industry has continued to achieve record after record in the face of a seemingly endless parade of predictions by various experts that it has peaked and would embark on a decline. Yet, here it is, setting yet another new production record even as both Baker Hughes and Enverus report the domestic count of active drilling rigs has declined by 15% over the past 12 months. That’s a continuation of a steady drop in drilling activity since 2017, during which the number of active U.S. rigs has declined by 70%. I’ve often been criticized for taking a skeptical stance related to predictions of “peak oil,” whether they be on the supply side or the demand side of the equation. Those criticisms generally come from the same people making all those consistently wrong predictions. July marked my 45th year of either being in the U.S. oil and gas industry or writing about it. The longer I’m around this vibrant, nimble, and innovative business, the more it surprises and often amazes me. More than that, though, the global economy remains an oil-based economy despite all the hype about the energy transition and trillions of economically ruinous, debt-funded dollars spent on subsidies for inadequate alternatives. Global demand for crude oil reached yet another all-time high in 2023, is on a pace to repeat that feat in 2024, and seems certain to continue rising for years to come, regardless of how many times Fatih Birol and his International Energy Agency (IEA) bureaucrats dummy up their peak oil models. To everyone in the U.S. oil and gas industry: Thank you for everything you do to meet the energy needs of the world’s rising population and fueling the engine of the global economy. That is all.

There are several reasons why this transition may face significant hurdles: * - Long-Distance Limitations: EVs, especially pickups with a light load, struggle with long-distance travel. * - Infrastructure Issues: There's a noticeable lack of charging stations. * - Safety Concerns: EVs have been known to spontaneously catch fire. * - Insurance Challenges: Insurance companies are either canceling policies or significantly raising rates. * - Maintenance Problems: EVs cause accelerated wear on tires and brakes. I got to admit - memories shouldn't be so short - one small error in the Gulf and you'll be a shadow of your former self. It's very unforgiving. Who drilled the best wells in Lower 48 last year? At this point, we have enough data across all basins to make a ranking! In 2023, the private operator Kaiser Francis crushed it, with their 19 wells in the Permian making an average of 305k barrels in their first 12 months. Other top Permian operators like Marathon, Coterra, ConocoPhillips, and Oxy also rise to the top, but surprisingly, two Uinta operators round out the top six: Ovintiv and XCL. We have been covering the incredible Uinta a lot over the past couple years, but it’s great to see the potential translate into this kind of performance. Despite being the earliest unconventional basin, the Williston saw excellent well results last year: Grayson Mill, Chord, Marathon, and XOM all landed in the top 12. Counter-narrative, operators have extended high performance there despite a mostly-drilled play core. In our age of consolidation, many of the largest operators make this list in multiple basins, including ConocoPhillips (Permian, EF), ExxonMobil (Williston, Permian), Devon (Permian, Williston), and Oxy (Permian, PRB). However, it’s still heartening to see top privates here like Kaiser Francis, XCL, Grayson Mill, and Mewbourne, even if they’re being acquired! Encino Energy rounds out the list as the only Appalachian player, thanks to excellent Utica well results. They would rank a lot higher if BOEs were included! However, even using a 20:1 equivalency would result in a list filled with Haynesville and Appalachian operators, a reminder of just how energy-prolific shale gas wells can be. Who will top the list in 2024? Coterra currently sits atop our ranking (using forecasted production to generate a 1-year cumulative), though not as many operators make our 15 wells in-basin per year cutoff. Across Lower 48, 2024 is looking even more productive than 2023 and has the potential to be the most productive year ever for unconventionals. The WSJ writes—and as EnergyPoint Research further discusses in a separate post on its account—satellite and other data reveal the impact of oil and gas drilling on the Permian Basin’s landscape. What operators and researchers are most concerned about are forces pushing the ground up. A growing concern for residents and scientists is that wastewater from disposal wells could migrate into the aging, unplugged wells that litter the Permian by the thousands and contaminate drinking-water supplies or shoot to the surface, where the fluids could damage ranchland. As background, alongside crude, oil-and-gas companies are extracting gargantuan amounts of subterranean water—in the Delaware Basin, between five and six barrels of water are produced, on average, for every barrel of oil. To dispose of it, they inject billions of barrels of wastewater into underground disposal wells. Operators inject most of the water down wells that reach about a mile under the surface, which is convenient and relatively cheap. Drilling clusters of injection wells means companies don’t have to build expensive pipelines to link disposal sites together. Oil execs say the issue of water disposal is having an impact on their bottom line, driving up the costs for new wells. One reason is that concentrated volumes of water increase pressure underground, which then makes it more difficult for companies to drill down through those levels to shale rocks. Operators also fear that, if left unmanaged, these developments could dent local support for their activities. “Produced water management is probably one of the, if not the biggest, challenge in the Permian,” said Cody Comiskey, an earth-science adviser at Chevron. With shrinking options to discard wastewater, crude producers have to get creative. Some are looking for lower-risk formations to inject water into and ways to treat water so it can be reused for agriculture. Whether these efforts will pass regulatory muster or how much they will cost remains unclear. “There’s just no silver bullet,” Comiskey said. The volume of briny, polluted water that companies have to handle has skyrocketed. In 2013, companies discarded about 382 MM barrels of water. Last year, they injected about 3.4 B barrels of water down disposal wells. The Earth is noticing. The number of earthquakes in the Permian with magnitudes greater than 2.5 jumped from 42 in 2017 to 671 in 2022, per B3 Insight. In late 2022, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in Reeves County. Texas regulators have imposed restrictions on injection volumes in the region, and the number of magnitude-3.5 earthquakes and higher has come down. In a related note, there's an emerging issue—and growing sense of urgency—around the need to improve methods used by the industry to estimate bottom-hole pressures of disposal wells. Withdrawals from petroleum inventories everywhere except for a build in SPR. The EIA reports are out and overall, we down 12.4 MMB. SPR went up 0.26 MMB to 393 MMB, Crude oil drew down 4.2 MMB to 417 MMB while petroleum products drew down 8.5 MMB to 804 MMB. The latter combined for 12.7MMB of drawdown to 1220 MMB – upward pressure on gasoline prices. Everything is within normal operating ranges with SPR coming off its recent low. Net overall exports continue. Net oil in was 2.7 MMB/D and product net exports out were 5.1 MMB/D. That’s an overall export of 2.4 MMB/D, a drawdown of 16.6 MMB for the week. Add tis net drawdown back and we would have a build for the week. Production was still at 13.6 MMB/D last week but that’s off the peak of two weeks ago, The rig count was stable over the course of last week. 589 total, 14 federal offshore 12 GOM. One more rig is chasing oil, one less chasing gas. Oil prices dropped anywhere from $1.70 (Brent) to $3.13 (LLS). WTI finished last week at $69.71/BBL. Add $3.48 for Brent and $1.75 for LLS. The crack spread rose $2.00 to $10.99/BBL. Gasoline was up 3¢ to $3.05/GAL. Spot natural gas prices at Henry Hub dropped a nickel to $3.10/MMBTU while futures prices rose 13¢to $3.41/MMBTU. Benoit Morenne writes in the WSJ on December 28, “U.S. Shale Is Growing Old. That’s a Problem for Donald Trump’s Oil Plans.” The Climate and Energy article appears in today’s (12/30) WSJ. “Wildcatters are mostly gone, replaced by more disciplined oil giants. Wall Street has helped instill that discipline, pushing oil companies to focus more on producing cash for investors. Meanwhile, production in most U.S. crude regions is set to decline as fields mature and sweet spots dwindle. “What this means: The oil patch is unlikely to see the kind of breakneck growth it saw in Trump’s first term, when daily crude production shot up from about nine million barrels to roughly 13 million. “’We’re not going to have the explosive growth that we’ve seen,’ Richard Dealy, who oversees Exxon Mobil’s Permian operations, said… ‘A telltale sign of shale’s ripening is the fates of rapidly disappearing wildcatters, who ignited the shale boom by deploying new drilling techniques and hydraulic fracturing. These companies, many of them privately held, retained a penchant for frantic drilling even after their publicly traded peers reigned in spending and started returning cash to investors.’ For those interested SPE, AAPG and SEG are jointly hosting a Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) conference in Houston at the G.R.
